GAO who has always been a doom and gloom bunch or..
LM who has come UNDER LM’s own projected cost for the last two LRIP cycles.
It does not take a genius to see that LM has a better track record when it comes to projecting the flyaway costs for the F-35.

Am I to understand that without the water, the engine lifecycle is diminished at a greater rate?
LM would likely choose current rates for the legacy fighters because the clients who are currently using legacy fighters could compare them to their current upkeep costs.
LM would likely also compare them to current (new build) legacy fighters.
One thing to remember is that a majority of the software related to the F-35 program is in the logistics side of the equation.
Except that it fails to account for operating cost, which can vary considerably from one type to another. Lifetime costs of two aircraft with the same flyaway price can be very different indeed, & it’s the lifetime cost that matters to an air force.
This is one of the largest selling points for he F-35, ie lower operating cost than legacy airframes.
Without water the Harrier cannot hover. The F-35B is not so limited. Period.
As for the engine failure…. that’s what it was supposed to do. It had the equivalent of 8 years of flight hours on it and it was in the middle of a VERY long (longer than could ever happen in real life) supersonic flight profile. The point of the test was not to find out IF it would fail, but WHEN, HOW, and WHY.
As it turns out, the issue was very minor and there will not be any delay in further flights or testing.
The bring-back capacity does not relate to the flight profile. It is listed as VLBB or Vertical Landing Bring Back. It is a separate KPP from range so don’t try and combine the two.
You can always try the ultra-hardened large shelters.
The 767 were fine, that’s why they won the original contest (lease agreement).
Then EADS complained and the specs were changes.
Then they came up with the AT.
Well, it’s not operational (yet), sofar it is being tested for a possible upgrade which has been a long time coming.

The 5k lb bringback has NOTHING to do with being internal. That number is still valid and is not a mistake.
Nowhere in the 2007 briefing does it say the F-35B’s internal load is 5000lb.
The 41100 numbers did prove one thing irrespective of temp, air pressure,etc… it was 500 lbs more than the computer models predicted.
Remember, flight tests are not to FIND OUT what the performance is, but rather to CONFIRM the data that has been calculated during design and development. They are not guessing at anything.
