F-15Cs in Alaska got their AESAs in 2000, not quite 15 years 🙂
When will Eurocards get AESA in squadron level units?
The reason that nobody else has had Airborne AESA is two-fold:
1. They did not have to manufacuting ability for the small scale involved in the modules.
2. They did not have to money to research that ability.
fyi, The reason that I place the APG-81 as a 3rd gen is:
1. Small, snap-in, size of modules
2. Multiple channels per module
3rd gen US AESA
1st Gen = F-15Cs from Alaska (APG-63(V)2)
2nd Gen = F-22 (APG-77), F-18 (APG-79), APG-80, SABR, RACR
3rd Gen = F-35 (APG-81)

I do not think the control over info coming from the F-35 Program Office is as tight as some think.
Take the latest Briefing that I posted on the 10th. There are several factual errors that actually made the F-35 look worse than it is.
Also, the Program Office is a Pentagon run program. It has access to all the happenings with the F-35.
All that being said, what level of independent source can there really be?
Take the F-22 for example. It is a program where all the info comes from LM and the Pentagon. Yet nobody doubts the info and the superiority of the F-22. Did the F-22 have it’s problems? Yes, but they were addressed and the F-22 has grown into the best fighter flying.
Now look at the F-35. Not only is information available from LM and the Pentagon, but 13 partner nations also have very detailed access to the most secret of information. Will the F-35 have future problems? YES, but they will address them and the F-35 will likely become the best multi-role fighter for the next few decades.

Really? The formerly full stealth F-35 has become semi-stealth, because some gaps were handed to the EW suite like every ordinary 4.5 generation fighter.
Who said “Semi-Stealth”? Nobody with the JSF Program, neither Military or Civialian, have said that. The JSF has always been call “All-Aspect VLO”.
That being said, nobody (from above) has ever claimed that the RCS is the same from all angles. The same goes for the F-117, B-2, and F-22. Radar shaping is all about focusing radar reflections so as not to reflect towards the broadcasting antenna. The key is to keep these focused reflections away from known radar installations or enemy fighters. This is part of the function of the EW suite.
Ordinary, non-LO AC, do not have the benefit of shaping and have a larger RCS across broad aspects of their airframe. They have to rely more on the active jamming functions of their EW suites to cut down on detection.
It is not the lowest, but the highest peak, which does give the level of stealth.

That is just the 2D-view. That will alter with the atmospheric conditions, speed and the condition of the aircraft itself.
All of which is factored into the EW suite of the F-35.
I can’t believe you have just spent four lines of text describing something you have never seen, therefore I logically assume you got a diagramme with F-35’s RCS values in all directions. Please, share with us, I am curious to see it, too. Thanks.
I think he is speaking of the general RCS graph such as below:
As you can see, the RCS varies as you look from different angles. I am also sure he was not saying that he has see the actual F-22 or F-35 RCS graphs. He was referencing what he new would be variable returns based on angles.
When LM is designing the EW suite of the F-35, they will take the RCS graph into account and the treat level of a detected enemy will adjust based on what angle and elevation he is at. This is also part of the route planning software.
The biggest limitation I see here is the fact that the enemy RWR only needs to detect the primary signal with incomparably smaller drop off (theoretically only square of distance) while the LPI radar has to rely on scattered reflections of the target (twice the distance plus a considerable energy loss at the reflection surface). I am with Cola on this – I think the next generation of digital RWR devices will move today’s LPI into HPI category, again.
RWR tech always RESPONDS to radar tech. When RWR eventually catches up to LPI tech, the radar tech of teh day will have moved on to newer technology.
Who knows, we might have airborne LIDAR by then.
