US military and defence industry officials are close to adopting Silicon Valley-style software development and refresh processes for military aircraft, starting with billion-dollar upgrade programmes for the Lockheed Martin F-35 and F-22.
The new strategy could be approved within months as the F-35 joint programme office faces the challenge of fixing bugs in the F-35’s go-to-war Block 3F software and developing the follow-on Block 4 package of capability improvements.
F-35 software planning has entered a “strategic pause” until JPO staffers present a new software development plan for consideration by top Pentagon officials in late October, says F-35 programme executive Vice Adm Mat Winter, speaking at the Defense News Conference on 6 September.
Meanwhile, the “agile” software development technique used by Apple to develop iPhone applications could be adopted by the F-22 programme office, as the US Air Force considers developing a stealthy transmit and receive mode for the Link 16 datalink to communicate with a future unmanned “loyal wingman” and the F-35, says Sean Singleton, director of business development and marketing for the Pentagon’s Defense Innovation Unit Experimental (DIUx).
Singleton, speaking on the sidelines of the same conference, says the F-22 SPO and prime contractor Lockheed are open to making the switch, with an eye to accelerating the new datalink capability from 2021 or 2022.

The Pantsir-S2 is an improved version of the Pantsir-S1 which uses the same missile launcher and anti-aircraft cannons. The Pantsir-S2 can launch new surface-to-air missiles which increases the range from 20 to 30 km. The Pantsir-S2 is also fitted with a new SOTS S-band search radar to increase the detection range from 36 km to over 40 km. In April 2014, Colonel Yuri Muravkin, deputy commander of the air defense troops has announced that the Russian army will get an upgraded version of the Pantsir S-1 air defense system and a new missile. The new Pantisr-S2 has entered in service with the Russian army in 2015. It was deployed in Syria to protect the Russian air force troops at the Hmeymim airbase in Latakia. Footage from RT Ruptly of February 2016 has showed Pantsir-S2 stationed at the Hmeymim airbase in Latakia, Syria.
Since the only unresolved cases came from Luke AFB, which is the main USAF training base for the F-35A, it was more than likely a temp training issue due to either inexperienced pilots or maintenance personnel.
The article said that they could not find a common cause which most likely means that there were different causes that were, are, or will be addressed as they are identified.

Keep in mind that the F-15E is the 1st fleet to get UAI.
JASSM was integrated using UAI into the F-15E so it did not need a block upgrade for it. The same will apply to future UAI weapon where the customer can add it with the only separation needed to be tested.
I know that other mfgs are going UAI besides US based ones. NATO is working to get up to that standard and I know that Turkish mfgs are starting to use it.
