The whole anti-JSF movement in Canada started as a throwaway Opposition Argument used to try and win votes. Their primary argument was that the JSF was a no-bid, sole-source contract yet they tried to do the same thing with the F-18.

It reminds me of Trump & the wall. It was a throwaway line that morphed into a 40-foot tall wall that he thinks Mexico will pay for. Now that he won they are already walking that back into a more reasonable position.

Any purchase cost benefit of the SH over the F-35 would disappear as they would need two supply lines, training programs, etc.

First, it’s the “requirement” that sets what kind of CPU is installed, not “when”.

Second, the F-35 has multiple ICP cards that have been completely redesigned twice since development began in 2001 due to increases in the requirements. The latest TR2 ICP first flew in Nove 2013. Since the avionics for Gripen E have been frozen for more than two years, the F-35 has newer chips, per your logic.

ESM wise the F-35 > F-22 > GripenE (or any other non-us jet). You cannot just look at the ICP and think that is all there is. There are sub-components that do a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to ESM.

+1… relying on 20+ year old avionics is kinda futile.. stealth and speed, there are the things the F-22 can still impress with..

Speed is only on top of the list of an airshow fanboi. Pilots understand that it’s the avionics of the F-22 that get you in the position to take a shot vs a target who never knew you were there. The same is true of the F-35, just with more ways to feed the avionics with info. Don’t misunderstand, speed & maneuverability are still important, they are just not the “most” important factor in winning an A2A engagement.
