Flyaway estimate for an FY2015 (ie LRIP9) F-35A was $133mil in the FY2015 budget. Why are you surprised when that’s what the contract is for?

I don’t think it’s as simple as 60° camera angles. Pretty sure it’s closer to twice that with three-dimensional coverage in all directions.

90° angles would give you full coverage (100° just to be sure there are no gaps).

Assuming it still is limited to the original 640*512 sensor & a 100° cone means an angular accuracy of 0.2° (0.1° with the 1000*1000 sensor).

It’s called a trademark, not a patent. :stupid:

There is a HUGE difference between what is available to the pilot (ie what’s in a current block) and what has been demonstrated using actual hardware & Block plans (ie TBM,, ground fire, etc tracking).

Once again, stop thinking of just a single sensor as EOTS will always give you a much more accurate track and the pilot will not even be aware of what sensor is providing the info unless he specifically looks for that info. EODAS is just a tripwire sensor for anything outside WVR anyways.

4 f-35s spread 25km from each other means the outer 2 have a 5 degree differential.

This assumes that there are only 4 F-35s with LOS.

At that range, the rocket will be visible when it breaks the 90k foot horizon level (assuming F-35s are cruising at 40k feet).

The point of the detect & track for TBMs is not to engage the TBM with the F-35, but to determine the likely launch area so that other assets are not hunting blind for the TEL.

This whole “EODAS only has 1 degree of accuracy” BS is easy to disprove, just look at the video of it tracking the Falcon 9 booster.

Why are you limiting it to EODAS?

The F-35 would immediately slew the EOTS to the track and refine it without any intervention from the pilot.

Given that the F-35’s sensor is IIR and that book makes no distinction between IIR and IR, let alone that the F-22/35 were the first to have IIR based MAWs, I’d say it is very safe to say that the book is generalizing.

That is a generic assumption and not a specific report of EODAS’s capability.

    EODAS = unique
    HMDS = unique
ESM = unique (2nd only to the F-22’s)
MADL = unique (remember that it has a very long range & can support 25 nodes while Gripen has 4)
MDF (Mission Data Files) = unique

Add to that the computing power it has and you end up with a unrivaled system (note that I did not say everything about it is unique).

my biggest disappointment was easily F-22, the downtime is just too great.
biggest hype was F-35 flying properties and DAS, at least among enthusiast community,
    i’ve read suggestions that
#F-35 supercruise speed is probably above M1.5,
#DAS can pinpoint and get a firing solution on a ballistic missile launch site well over 1000 km away,
#F-35 will bring peace and prosperity to the world,
#F-35 can loiter at 60k ft above earth and take pot shots at mere mortals

If you are going to count Fanboy hype, it needs to be balanced against the utter BS that the haters propagate ala APA, Wheeler, etc. The JPO, LM, & DoD have never said this kind of krap.

First , let’s cut this fairy tale of unrivalled situational awareness , please. With a fixed array AESA radar with just a +/- 60° degree scan area and in case of F-22 no IRST?
A limit of J-20, almost in the actual configuration, is IMHO the lack of TVC instead.

It’s not just the radar, but also the ESM and most importantly, the ability to share and develop tracks with his wing-mates WITHOUT giving his own position away (directional datalinks). On top of that, the sensor fusion engine with it’s ability (in the case of the F-35) to use over 600 methods to detect & ID an enemy is unique.

“Unrivaled” is exactly that, there is no current system like it in production. It does not mean that there never will be, just not now.

This is not some feature (for the F-35) that is a “future block” item. It has already demonstrated it going back to Block1B CAS “Quarterbacking” where the JTAC commented where the F-35 had done something that ~”had never been done before”.

It wasn’t just talking about the missed KPP-KPI or whatever.
I still hear about the would, should, must be ordinance capabilities of the F-35. The odd six AMRAAM in the W-bays. The so called future block magic. Although, its been sort of quite the last two years.
Go back to the late 90’s and re-read what was posted both here and on other forums by the usual suspects. Oh and there was the NGJ too..
    Does it ring any bells?

The 6 AAMs per bay was always a Block4/5 capability. Nobody of any credibility said it was a 3F thing. As far as the NGJ goes, it’s still pre-wired for it and it’s not the F-35’s fault that the USN has not pursued it.. times change. btw, The USMC still wants the F-35 for it’s only EW aircraft.

Shall we talk about where it has exceeded spec or disclosed a previously unknown capability:
    — Mach 1.2 Super Cruise if even for a short time
    — 4 towed decoys
    — 3 times the methods to ID a target then even the F-22
    — MADL that exceeded it’s range spec by “multiples”
    — APG-81 that actually has 1600+ T&R modules vs the previous “1200” number
    — Still emerging info about the FiberMat stealth structures
    — 760nm F-35A A2A Combat Radius (no eft)
    — F-35A spec was only a 1k bomb but ended up with a 2k bomb (they tried to do that with the B but failed… damn weight of space)
    — Doing things in CAS that “have never been done before”, (ie, quaterbacking) even at Block2 (quote from an FO)
    — Doing a double hand-off with an SM-6 at Block2B

btw, The main reason you do not see a large number of weapons in it’s block plan is that when it gets UAI as part of Block4, it will no longer need a Block plan for most of the weapons that it will get. Even Turkey realized this and is making it’s weapons (SOM, etc) UAI compliant.

Missing a KPI by a relatively small margin is not an example of “over-hype”.

Missing a cost projection by 30% is.

Look at F-35 overhype since the 90’s for clues..

The only thing over-hyped has been the price, which is still cheaper than Rafale, Eurofighter, or F-15E.

From it’s high in 2012, the F-35’s cost (for both procurement and lifetime sustainment) have been steadily falling in both the current cost and lifetime estimates.
