Theoretically yes she could still fly!
XX894 has been sympathetically restored to ground taxiing status using only genuine spares from other Buccaneers. Forgetting for the moment that we have no zero hour engines with paperwork, the biggest issue is with the fuel system. When we got our hands on her the fuel system leaked like a sieve. It wasn’t the pipe work joints, but the pipe work itself. It had the equivalent of tin rot! As soon as one leak was fixed another one would appear (and they weren’t small leaks either)!!
Now XX894 has a modified fuel system which only uses the first four (out of eight) fuselage tanks. This modification alone would preclude any hope of her climbing in to the skies again.
However, nothing is impossible. With a huge amount of disposable cash, OEM backing and CAA approval then flight could perhaps one day be achieved!

Lovely photos Keith! Thanks for posting!

As for being ready to fly Peter…if only! She’s a lot nearer now though than she’s ever been in since leaving the RAF!

Here is some video taken on the very same day as Keith’s photos…

Thanks for the kind and interesting comments.
For those of you that enjoy seeing Buccaneers on the move, here’s some more footage of both XX894 and XX900 along with several other Buccaneers at the farewell fly past event held at Lossiemouth back in 1994. The video was filmed by XX894’s owner and is the copywrite material of The Buccaneer Trust.

I hope this stirs some memories for some of you?!

Ours is in Desert scheme at the moment, but during the next year/18 months, we are looking to go back to 16Sqn colours, circa 1976/7, one of the first squadrons that she was assigned to.

Is that the two tone camouflage colour scheme with the grey underside Nige?

Have these been moved to the fire dump already, or are they waiting to be moved, can’t quite work out the location from the pics. Any idea how they got there? i would love to get in their to have a look around again.

Both aircraft are sat right on the edge of the fire pan which can be seen behind the Harrier in the third photo. I’m not sure how they got there but they certainly weren’t on site when I last visited back in July. I was told that the Wessex has come from Fleetlands? I’m unsure about the Harrier, same location perhaps?

    Not true
There are three airworthy Buccaneers in Cape Town.
You can even have a flight in one.
    See http://www.thundercity.com
They also have EE Lightnings and Hawker Hunters.

    I meant in the UK…True!

Buccaneers XX900 and possibly XX894 are going to be ‘on the move’ for anyone who’s planning on attending Sunday?

Ah! the canopy on XW544 not XX894!

The canopy mechanism on 544 has had a replacement motor fitted but still has a seized Teleflex cable issue to sort out. The Teleflex cable runs from the pilots canopy operating lever back to the de-clutching gearbox on the canopy motor.

The wings have been lowered on 544 as can be seen in my photos. This however, was done manually as the replacement hydraulic line has not been found or fabricated yet.
Whilst waiting for this hydraulic part to materialize it seemed to be a good idea to get on with something else, hence the engine change!

I took some footage of Bruntingthorpe’s other Bucc (XX900) taxing during the last open weekend in May, but it was from the back seat:D I’ll try and post it when I get a few minutes spare.

Good to see her with her wings down. Whats wrong with the canopy Plazz?

    Peter,

There’s nothing wrong with the canopy it all works well. The problem is that the air conditioning system has not been tested since it was re-installed a couple of years ago, and up until now, it has been way down on the ‘to do list’.
As you can see from the photos it was a hot day on Saturday and we would have probably passed out if we had the lid shut!

    Cheers Plazz
