Nothing as yet its still being kept under water to preserve it until such time as it can be treated.
I promised to get back to this subject after taking professional advice I have hopefully found a solution that will allow preservation of the original dial without interference with it or removing paint. This involves fitting specially made glass which will stop the radiation in its tracks. The usual thickness of this is 5mm and as most instrument glass is 2.5mm I am still waiting for advice on whether this can be reduced.
How ever considering the low levels of radiation emitted by even the worse so called hot instruments the prospects are good its simply a case of economics of production if 2.5mm is not available.
The majority of instrument bezels will cope with this increased thickness although personally i may bite the bullet and have some made specially if its not available from stock.
I do not have any figures on cost as yet although itโs likely to be expensive considering the value of instruments these days should still be a viable solution.
Its worth mentioning that this glass is designed for use in the industry and will stop very high levels of radiation.
Cold water ?certainly not old chap ๐
I welcome debate on the subject. ๐
I am certainly not suggesting anyone should attempt a DIY solution.
The plan is that the specialist will clean the instrument stabilise the face and fit the glass for me.
On a personal note I am doing to this to combat any increase in legislation that may or may not occur not because I seriously think that if treated sensibly there is any significant risk.
I consider my own view an educated one in so much as I have done as much research as possible within the confines of the internet.
I donโt wish to reopen discussion on the risks I think that been done to death from both extremes.
My aim is simply to communicate my personal solution to a potential issue.
As an after thought if anyone is considering ditching their box full of original Spitfire trim gauges please PM me I will come and dispose of them for you and I will even pay my own fuel cost. :diablo:
It seems this debate will continue on going around in circles, the fact is there is a solution and it will cost money hopefully not to much as I have already said I donโt know how much yet.
If people have concerns and or legislation gets tougher and we wish to preserve and continue to collect this particular piece of history it will have to be paid for.
The glass is available in any size so a picture frame type arrangement may suit complete panels, although It wont reduce the cost by much as the material is likely to be the majority of the cost.
Specialist manufactures are not really interested in doing one or two units or even ten the only way to keep the cost down or even get the job done as with all things is buy in bulk.
If someone can come up with a cheaper or any other solution I would be pleased to hear it.
Thank you very much now I can sleep. Much appreciated.
Mark so there is no suggestion the fillet I own was stolen ? because that was not stated on the previous comments and looks very much like there is finger pointing or suspicion
going on. The person I bought this from is beyond reproach and I am quite sure you know who I am talking about. It certainly would have been helpful my business be mentioned that this piece was not part of the tail that went missing.
Peter Arnold Please state for the record that you suspect me of stealing this piece ?
I have just come across this ancient thread . I can tell you all I did not steal this piece and anyone who suggests it better put up or shut up. I bought this in good faith along with the MOD plate from a well know aircraft restoration company
. Any suggestion I stole this is a lie , I am not a thief and everything I buy and sell is legitimate. I take great offence to any suggestion to the contrary.
Thankyou I forgot to upload probably the most important picture now added it lists a whole range of aircraft with symbols and actions.
Great event there are still plenty of great pieces out there if you look hard enough. I really hope this event can continue its the highlight of the year there is nothing quite like searching the stalls and actually handling things. Well done Andy ! ๐
I dont know about the PRU Spits but once saw and entry in Dave Glasers log book when he was flying from Cumhead testing 90 gallon drop tanks he managed a flight of 5hrs and 10 minutes in a standard fully armed Spitfire.
B of B Pilot Dave Glaser
Churchstanton later known as Culmhead in Somerset UK was an operational fighter station throughout the second world war.
On one of my many visits to this airfield I found a rusty piece of metal sticking out of the ground. *As I picked it up I noticed a name painted on it in remarkably good condition. The name was Flt Lft Glaser, .After a bit of research and plenty of phone calls I managed to get a letter forwarded to Sdr Ldr Glaser via the Fighter asssociation.
A few days later I had a phone call from a very real Sdr Ldr Glaser. He was as amazed as I was and told me that he had only been at Culmhead for two weeks. While there he was flying with a ninety gallon drop tank attached to his Spitfire. In his log book is recorded a flight of 5hrs 10mins. He was operational throughout the war from the Battle of Britain to Australia in 1945 logging 3000 operational hours. Over the years we became good friends.
As the government seems unable to fund care homes for everyone who needs them, there should be exemptions for servicmen who have served their Country during wartime.
I would imagine there is quite a small number who would qualify and this could be funded from the national lottery or a small portion of the 1% of GDP that our that the goverment seems to think is affordable to donate in charity payments abroad.
Despite the current economic conditions Britain is far from being poor. For someone who has given so much to preserve freedom enjoyed by everyone being forced to sell medals for care in old age is simply wrong.
I already knew that of course. No privacy at all on FB

You can advertise comercially on FB for free ๐ ๐

It has nothing to do with ‘immunity’
Look at it from the point of view of the commercial enterprise that provides us with this forum, apparently for nothing
If somebody supports the company, is there any good reason why, as long as it is not overpowering, they should not be allowed a little slack on the forum to punt commercial stuff?
I / we are genuinely interested in your view on this.

I think we might be dragging Andy’s thread a little ๐ฎ I think its good that events are advertised on here, later in the year I will be giving a heads up on my own annual event. But in an age where we are constantly bombarded with cold calls , unsolicited text messages, emails pops up and all the other manner of annoying advertising its nice to visit a forum where comercial adds are banned. I do not think spending money with key should cut any slack its a slipery slope, we either all follow the forum rules or its a free for all.
