Yes, definately XH767, she must have moved sideways for a while, I was surprised when I looked at a map yesterday and realised how close to Monkton, Yatesbury actually is. Agree with Dave, a very useful missing link, a little sad to see, but thanks Sabrejet!

Well Done Jet Age Museum, I am really pleased you got her, and to think two Javs just down the M5 from me, can’t express how chuffed I am – now, just two more to collect from afar, bring them home …. let’s go!
    Box was XH767, now Elvington.
    Lovely.

Lovely Gina there (I think?), Herbert – very impressive and nicely mounted. I had no idea what it was, thanks for the challenge – the ‘no clue’ radio callsign didn’t actually help other than the nationality. Now, you know you must make room for it, so if ever the FAW is in your way … 🙂
    All the very best.

Brillaint Herbert, that looks sensational, nice to see the GGS re-united with a headpad.

The twin microswitches on the top linked by the large bridge (that pops off when you depress the spring-loaded ends) is NORMAL TRIM nose up / down.
The ‘thumb’-side button runs the gun camera.
The one hiding at the front of the grip may be a copy of the Press-To-Talk or Press-To-Mute (both also on the Stbd throttle).

Trigger and Safety catch don’t need a mention, other than to say as soon as you move the safety catch away from SAFE, the gun-firing inverters (Type 300) would start if guns were selected (… and no weight on wheels or Butt Test switches ON!).

    You’ve done her proud there.
Any further clues to the aircraft I/D?

One interesting point from your pic of the rear of that main panel is the fitment of the Horizon Gyro Mk3A rather than the FAW.9’s default HGU Mk3 – an odd choice since it has an 18-way cable on it designed to connect to a control unit for auto-fast-erect and be able to feed the Sperry automatic pilot I’d normally associate with an FAW.8 – or I might just be mad!

    Good stuff.

    Cheers

Well-known here in Worcester, an incident (possibly) involving Clarke Gable at Perdiswell in 1942:

    Hi Alex

After much trawling over the years for anything at all relating to AI Mk 17 I only found poor pics of these two which may lead you somewhere –

Valetta T4 WG256 (Wfu 1967 on Wyton dump – nice b&w pic of whole a/c)
Valetta T4 WJ469 0 from 228OCU Leeming 1957 (just its nose poking out in an airshow static lineup)

Be most interested in any gen around ARI.5807 AI.17, being a huge Javelin fan myself. I’ve gathered all the usual cockpit pics from online and PNs, but this particular EKCO? setup is very poorly represented isn’t it. Just a system schematic would be nice, or pics of the control units and scanner setup. I’ve got the Collimator NF Mk3 lens assembly and mounting frame but sadly the baby CRT had gone from the tube but I have handled one back in the 70s. I remember the Pilot’s Type 900 controller for collimator brightness/focus, and have the Type 902 from the Nav’s Stbd console. Beyond that, the whole setup is a mystery. Frustrating really, being only 8 miles from Defford and 6 miles from Malvern!

Just found this, not spotted it before. Stills of XA801, ending with the ‘dismantling’. Upsetting.

Looking great there Herbert, nicely done! Indeed the collimator/GGS mounting casting was overpainted too, rather well actually, sympathetically one might say, but just a toothbrush and WD40 had it falling off in sheets to reveal a very well preserved painted original.

I’ve stripped down all the Nav panels to component parts for cleanup, but have stored everything away for the moment until time allows for re-assembly. Sadly still no clues at all to the aircraft ID this end.

It was a treat to power up all the lighting components and warning lamps, and find the filaments all operational after 45 years or thereabouts – quality stuff.

Do have a go at revealing the dessicant window on the GGS though, it might add a touch of colour you know, and the head pad is a substantial item that will make the sight look right again – it’s a tad skinny without that (but it will stick out a bit)!

    All the best

    Hi Bob, all

Here’s a shot of ours at Worcester ATC, 1976. I restored it using the best from two wrecks we had, in-between dealing with the Javelin outside. I left in the early 80s and know nothing more than it was gone shortly afterwards. I remember using a GPO uniselector to allow a multitude of signals to be sent to the cockpit, via the limited number of still-working sliprings. The bellows were poor, but we had a tremendous time with it for a short period. The crab trundled off the chart table a few times, I gave it a bungee-based safety harness after it bent its ink-laying wheel!

    Hi Herbert
    1) Just a red warning lamp (Jav front cockpit, over gun scavenge magnetic indicators, port coaming panel you have that supports the ARC52). Nav has the same lamp on the high-level instrument panel – the set of three lamps you have – top = white (too high), middle = green (at altitude), bottom = red (too low). Google RT7 APN-1. The RT-7 Tx/Rx does have an automatic pilot coupler but no idea whether it’s an input or an output, and no evidence Javs ever exploited it.

    2) Yep, NDBs / VORs. (or broadcast radio if you were bored). Here’s the Marconi 7092 gubbins, the control panel fits in your square space, Nav upper right panel …

Many thanks Rob for you kind offer. Hope you test-ranged a dustbin lid or similar with the system you did up, sounds wonderful.

I’ve got a Limit Switch waiting for me at the sorting office, will grab that in the morning. I’ll just give it a little longer to see if a complete ID-14 pops up with the APN range option enabled/fitted, otherwise I’ll let you know, I am most grateful to you.

I see there’s a few crop up from time to time with the top right range selector defunct / missing, I guess to effectively backdate to ARN and stop any low-level silliness?

    fingers crossed
    cheers.

    Hi Herbert

It just applies a constant gentle physical ‘hum’ to the case (runs from the 115v AC supply IIRC) to keep the reading accurate – a means to protect the instrument from the shock of the old-fashioned way – tapping the glass – as the older instruments had a habit of sticking slightly like any barometer, and 20 Feet could make all the difference! I guess it demonstrates just how good the anti-vibration measures were in terms of the panel mounting itself. Problem designed out nowadays presumably.

    Hi Herbert

See item (3) in the Pilot’s Notes Port Side View, in post 10 above from Steve – a felt-lined stowage for the camera.

Here you’ll find pics showing a camera in place, and yes I guess it would be set up for training and review as required …
