Thanks chaps…fascinating stuff.
Found this one lurking landside at Kemble last weekend…it’s either being stripped down or beginning to look a bit sorry for itself…
Janie
As Jon said, about half an inch further left in the bottom left-hand corner. Great picture, though, do you have any more?
Fascinating stuff!! Imagine the paperwork you’d need these days to taxi a Beverley across a public highway and skate it around in the mud. I might write to the Evening Echo and ask if anyone has any pictures from those days…
I spent many a happy hour wandering along the footpath behind the church. I vividly remember ‘discovering’ it one Saturday morning, crawling through the undergrowth and coming across a clutch of dilapidated airframes in a compound behind Bob Batt’s hangar….some years later, there was an Aero 45, stripped to bare metal over there. 15/33 was still operational in those days and I recall another weekend sitting right on the edge of the runway in the undershoot and an Air UK Bandit landing on 15…
I got to know the security guys quite well in those days. Some were far more accomodating than others and I often cadged a lift around the airfield with some of them. On one occasion, I got picked up at the taxiway crossing (the BAF Carvair and Dove were still extant and there were a couple of Icelandic Bell 47’s in the Helicopter Hire hangar), driven around the entire airfield and eventually dropped off back at the Terminal, only to remember that I’d left my pushbike in the churchyard, resulting in a long walk back!
I’m pleased this thread’s resurfaced again, brings back lots of memories….
I assume the aircraft just taxied across the grass, north of the hotel complex?
I remember from my early 80’s spotting days there was no fence behind the hotel, when Harvest Air used to operate the Daks and Islanders. I also recall two large gates on the front of the Museum compound but I’d guess the fence went up after the larger exhibits went on site. From what I recall, the Hi Tec building, Flights and the builder’s merchant were all much later additions to Aviation Way
I’d love to see some pictures of the Beverley taxiing to the Museum site.
I know the Saab J29 flew in and I assume a fair few of the other exhibits did too…
G-AXPG is still registered to it’s original builder although I don’t personally remember that one being at the Museum
G-ADXS was certainly there.
That went to Tilbury, Shoreham, Cambridge(?) and, I believe, is now at Breighton with the Real Aeroplane Compnay
Does anyone know if this was the aircraft that used to sit up on blocks in bare metal near the fuel farm on the north side at Southend in the early 80’s?
Or Gloucester (Tiger Airways)
Common site albeit a bit further west, around the A40/M40, generally leaving the Dowty factory at Staverton bound for repair somewhere…
Lighten up wyvernfan!!
It’s a classic British thoroughbred, modifed to go bl00dy fast and low around a racing circuit…
It’s being capably flown by an experienced pilot who, I’m sure has taken appropriate consideration of the risks involved. Accidents do happen in all walks of life and the margin for error in this scenario is reduced. Nevertheless, I’d much prefer to see it in this environment than any other…
It sold for £900. The associated diary sold for £440. Needless to say, I was outbid…..substantially!!

There’s a private collection at Birlingham, near Pershore. Hunter, Meteor, Sea Hawk, JP and a Vampire IIRC, can’t remeber a Canberra though…
I’ve not seen any of these before…can someone do a when/where list?
Some recent pictures on the Concorde SST forum showing the repairs complete and the aircraft generally looking quite smart: –
