The Concorde was designed for the aviation industry of the 1960s.

Come the oil price hikes during the 1970s, particularly around the time of the Yom Kippur War in 1973, the Concorde was too small with too few seats to be an attractive proposition to foreign (ie, non-UK and non-French) operators – they simply wouldn’t have been able to make money with it.

BA and Air France, both nationalised airlines, had no say in the matter and were lumbered with the Concorde come hell or high water.

This is what killed the aircraft as a marketable proposition. Nothing at all to do with US jealousy or paranoia.

Only national pride and the high premiums that Air France and BA were able to slap on the tickets kept it in service with those airlines.

Having said that, why was no-one in the West interested in easing the plight of the Afghans groaning under the Taliban yoke before the attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon?
