I wonder if there’s some ANF/ASMP DNA in there.
A new Eurofighter World issue is now available here:
http://www.eurofighter.com/eurofighter-world/publications/latest-eurofighter-world.htmlEdit:
Had a look at it now, there isn’t much new, but spare the old news and exaggerated marketing stuff there are some info about the proposed Typhoon 2020. Interesting bits include the LERX, passive missile warners and the original LDP position (forward left fuselage station) appears to be back in consideration as well. It’s also being said that an automatic critical altitude recovery mode is to be introduced. It’s additionally stated that the RecceLite is being integrated right now providing Typhoon with a reconnaissance capability.
Passive missile warners ? Are they planning to drop the active MAWS or supplement them ?
I think it is flat out wasteful not going for GaN when it is so close to become standard, even for a customer keen on AESA.
Indeed, by the time the Captor-E is operational, GaN will certainly be a mature enough technology (no, I’m not tongue-in-cheek… really !)
In the previous Rafale thread, Toan posted this Taiwanese joke :
“2. “The Frenchmen declared that they had successfully combined three functions into one missile (BVR engagement, WVR dogfight, and Self-defence), but we have successfully discovered the fourth new function of that missile: Anti-submarine……””
(which made me LOL, BTW)
Well, the ASW MICA would fit just fine on the M2K attack submarine !

😀
So that journalists and fanboys can’t mock really low number of modules ?
Edit : Why use M2K as a testbed when Rafale is flying around ?
Well… try to find any pic of an operational AESA fighter radar showing the modules, their number and disposition. I don’t think it exists in the public domain.
Why use an M2K ? Because there are more M2Ks to spare than Rafales I suppose…
That’s because the official pics were photoshopped as well.
Yes, but not the same way. See the new pic :

The blanking out of the antenna and the Mirage 2000 test bed seem to indicate that it is the actual, finalized RBE2 AA. No counting TRs on this one.
I don’t know if someone could scan the picture of the RBE2-AESA in the latest Air & Cosmos. it’s a very interesting one because the actual antenna is photoshopped out, unlike the previous “official pics” which had many ones counting the TR modules on the plate…
1. IAF shall decide the final winner of MMRCA in December, 2011.
2. The manufacturer who offers the lower whole life-cycle cost of 40 years for its product will win the final competition.
3. The initital batch of 18 MMRCAs shall begin to be delivered to IAF from the original manufacturer in December, 2014.
4. The following 108 MMRCAs shall be produced by HAL in India ~ The first fighter built in HAL should roll out in December, 2016. Thereafter, HAL will deliver six jets per year, which will go up to 20 per year later. HAL will achieve 85% technology absorption by the end.
This seems almost unbelievably fast. The MMRCA might then be decided earlier than the EAU contract and the brazilian FX program… who’d have thought that a year ago ?
Okay, let’s just agree that there are gradations on “multirole” and “unstable”… One can be less/more multirole/unstable than the other, but still both are unstable/multirole in the absolute.
As to the EF page, well, not everyone is an aviation fan with extensive aerodynamic knowledge. They’ve got to explain things to Mr Joe Public taxpayer after all and give him the impression that his money’s well spent in ossum hardware.
Besides if Rafale has Spectra, a military Concorde would have the bigger and more powerful Gozer.
It’s not supposed to be about Rafale, Typhoon and Concorde. We all know that even though Rafale and Typhoon are better A2A and A2G platforms, they are rubbish at supercruise compared to Concorde. Did the Atlantic without drop tanks, too!
Well I say, an updated Concorde with an internal bomb bay and powerful jammers would beat everything else. Think of the number of stand off munitions and Meteor AAMs you could cram into this supercruising beast ! And the nose is bigger too, so you could put a huge AESA inside ! 😀
1. India is a member British Commonwealth of Nations.
2. If India buys Rafale, it will only make France happy and appreciating; and if India buys Eurofighter, it will make British, German, Italy, and Spanish happy and appreciating……:D
Does Italy/Germany/Spain’s satisfaction really matter (not trying to be flippant here) ? None are permanent UN Security Council members, none have a meaningful presence in the Indian Ocean (at most, some ships on anti-piracy patrol in the Horn of Africa area), all are still going to be willing to do business with India, whatever happens in the MMRCA competition.
Attack helos now ? Next we’ll learn that Tonnerre also brought along a platoon of Leclercs inside her holds and they “accidentally” lost themselves on the Libyan shore, “inadvertently” taking pot shots at Kaddaffi’s armor.
… and it was a spark from a welders torch that caused a devastating fire (in terms of the historical artifacts lost) at Monino in 2005.
The new repacement hangar has only just been re-opened.
Ken
Looks like welding and vodka shouldn’t go together… (I know, I’m stereotyping, but still…)
Obviously it’s a plot orchestrated by the CIA and Lockheed-Martin.
