I ‘ve been following this excellent thread from day one and some very clever things have been posted 🙂

Wrt the total amount of T/R modules fitted on the real RBE2-AA , it is still everyone ‘s guess until a French “Méca” in the airbase ‘s shelter get us a snapshot of the real thing .

If he did, I’d expect him to have problems afterwards…

When you know than Aesa “cheek arrays” are planned , where will they get the power from ?

    Cheers .

Maybe by the time it happens, they’ll be using GaN or even graphene… thus needing less overall power (because less is wasted as heat) ?

Why did they opt for such a small nose diameter on the Rafale?

If I’m not mistaken part of the reason was Rafale’s carrier role and the need to provide a good forward field of view to the pilot in landing configuration. Hence the rather steep down angle on the nose.

Isn’t it curious that neither the makers of DASS or SPECTRA have claimed parity/superiority with regards to the ALR-94, especially in light of the claims about the effectiveness of the ALR-94

If they did, you wouldn’t believe them anyway. Why should they care ?

Why would the cockpit display for a 5th gen Chinese fighter be in English?

They didn’t bother to translate the F-35 software ? :p

Truly, if the F-35 is even half as good as the PowerPoint warriors shilling it, it will be something to behold. :diablo:

Well, I’m bumping this up since the expert report called by the insurance company came up.
Quick facts (from the local newspaper’s article in French) :
_ the pilot didn’t have an IFR qualif (although the flight plan was IFR), but he is a local DGAC (Civil aviation authority) and BEA executive… and his personality seems to be raising reactions after the article (according to some, this guys’s a dubious character)
_ the direct cause of the accident : the installation of the fuselage ferry tank wasn’t done right, by a club member apparently. Consequence : the fuel in the right wing tank couldn’t be used. The plane crash-landed with 90 liters in it, the other tanks being empty.
Bad, bad, bad. It’s unlikely the insurance will pay the 130,000euros of compensation.

Moral of the story : don’t improvise and f*ck around with planes, it’ll bite you in the ass eventually. And it sucks because it’s gonna hurt my flying club 😡

Note that the Brazilian AF prefers the F/A-18E/F, but the politicians want the Rafale because France is offering better offsets (kickbacks and bribes) – if you believe American diplomatic cables revealed by Wikileaks.

    Fixed it for you. 😉

You obviouly didn’t grasp what I was trying to say..Dassault as a company or group of companies might not be desperate because they can survive on business jets as you correctly pointed out..Dassault is desperate for RAFALE. .If they lose in Brazil than there is a good chance they could also lose in India and UAE(rumor has it is already the case) They face the ultimate danger of dwindling into oblivion as Europe’s one and only ‘fighter aircraft prime manufacturer..French Airforce can’t order 11 fighters every year for the next 20 years to keep the assembly line open…Besides 11 fighters a year would be extremely expensive..

Well, no. It’s the AdA and MN, and their political leaders (the government) who should be desperate. Dassault can live without the jet fighter business, but the jet fighter business is indeed a strategically important asset for France, and Europe. If Dassault throws the towel, it’s over for Europe as a continent able to build fighter aircraft autonomously and not as subcontractors for American companies. Yes, there’s the Eurofighter – but it’s a composite of capabilities, and its own future is bleak too out of budgetary constraints (and JSF competition). There’s Gripen too, but vital parts of it are American as well.
Anyway, 11 fighters a year wouldn’t be “incredibly expensive”, it’s barely a minimum effort. Especially when you compare the annual cost with the stupendous wastes occured elsewhere in the French budget… (yes AME I’m looking at you).

Lula will no longer decide on FX-2. He said he will leave the decision to Dilma, exactly what Marinho said a week ago.

This is what I thought months ago ! Dilma will try to take few hundred million Euro’s additionally from Dassault’s bottom-line and put it directly onto Brazilian taxpayers. She knows how desperate Dassault is..

Dassault is a profitable, private company. They aren’t “desperate” : worse happens, they drop the military business and focus on their juicy civilian market (bizjets and computing applications).
Bottom line, their survival doesn’t rely on selling Rafales.

    Such an unfortunate name…
The design looks FREMM-ish, but then I suppose those stealthy sloped sides allow for less variety in shape.

Increments 3.1 and 3.2 will greatly increase the F-22’s A/G prowess though, both in the number of targets that can be simultaneously engaged, but in the ability to target them on the fly.

Just for comparison’s sake, the F-35 Blk 3 will track 100 (Situational Awareness Tracks) targets (ground and air) and provide Weapon’s Quality Tracks for 16 A2G and 8 A2A simultaneously.

    Source at Youtube 1:50 mark.

I see a lot of “will do”, but the real question is “when ?”
Or should we take into account every advance planned for the future (hat may or may not become real), or stick with today’s demonstrated capabilities ?

Laughing makes you younger, so thank me if i do make you laugh.
Currently the F-22, and yes in future the F-35, PAK-FA.
If the general and the king think that the rafale is previous generation technology, i don’t think they are technically false in saying so.

The Raptor is yesterday’s tech as well. Today’s tech will feature in the F-35, the Rafale F4, the Typhoon Tranche 4 (if there ever is one), maybe the PAK-FA.

The crash rate of Rafale ( 4 ) is unacceptable .. This incident could have severe consequences for Brazil and UAE ..Wrong crash at wrong time …This is not good…Its a bad omen…

At least this Rafale didn’t kill its pilot, unlike the mighty Raptor that hit a mountain not long ago.
See, it’s not difficult to make a stupid comment. :diablo:
