The prototype Molt Taylor Aerocar is here in Oshkosh.

If you follow this link and navigate to the video section of the Aerocar section, you can see a clip of how the wings come on and off.

A couple of years ago I got to drive the Lotus pictured above. It belongs to a guy called Ed Sweeney who, inspired by Molt Taylor’s concept, is attempting to create a modern version of the Aerocar. He’s using the Lotus as his basis – as it’s already a very lightweight production car. It was cool to drive around the streets in a car that had aircraft instruments in it! The performance of the car was dire. I was expecting to zip around in this fast little sports car but quickly found out that Ed had replaced the original Lotus engine with a 3 cylinder Subaru to save weight.

Start saving for Oshkosh 2005 now! Burt Rutan said he would bring SpaceShipOne and sell tickets for $5 each for a ride in space out of OSH!

“Did the RFC have long range bombers and bomb Germany back?”

I’m told we dropped over 1 million phosphorous incendiaries on Germany in the last few months of WWI. Interestingly a lot of the targetting was not against cities but against the German harvest of 1918 – trying to set fire to their wheat fields etc.

The aforementioned Cole & Cheeseman book is definitely the best general history of the subject.

Most of the things we are familiar with from the strategic bombing campaigns of WWII were foreshadowed in WWI.

The “Paschendale” lyric is from an Iron Maiden song of the same name.

Yes I remember a lot of heating ducting in the Anson at East Fortune was wrapped in asbestos and it cost a lot of money to have a company come in and remove it.

We could speculate all day about the “what ifs” of WW2.

What if Hitler had never declared war on the USA after Pearl Harbor? He didn’t have to.

Winning WWII was certainly a team effort but I too am glad to see the Russians getting some recognition. Without doubt the back of the enemy was broken on the eastern front.

Here’s what EAA Warbirds of America has to say on the subject:

The EAA Warbirds of America, a division of the Experimental Aircraft Association in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, is a family of owners, pilots and enthusiasts of “warbirds,” or ex-military aircraft.

    Purpose
Our purpose is: (a) To promote and encourage the preservation and operation of World War II and other such aircraft that are representative of military aviation operations, and (b) to educate its members and other interested persons in methods of safe operation and maintenance of World War II and other such aircraft that are representative of military aviation operations.

    Goals
It is our aim, and our motto, to “keep ’em flying.” Most of the warbirds we see at air shows and other gatherings are owned by individuals and museums. It is the determination to fly these high performance airplanes, combined with the desire for preserving a piece of our heritage, that makes these owners want to display these magnificent machines. Unlike going to a museum and merely viewing these aircraft, one can now see, hear, feel and even smell what it was like to fly and maintain the birds when they were working for a living.

    Services
What started out as a club for World War II fighter owners has now blossomed into an organization whose members own and fly the whole gamut of ex-military aircraft — from the old biplanes, trainers, fighters, bombers, and liaisons of World War II to the early jets of the Korean War era to the aircraft of the Vietnam War. Even foreign aircraft are not left out. Former adversary’s warbirds are now highly prized airplanes.

    Squadrons
The history of aviation includes the historic warbird aircraft from around the world. Warbirds have become the focus of the EAA Warbirds of America and Warbird Squadrons. Squadrons are a part of the EAA Chapter family and as such, offer the added value of membership participation at a local level. All men and women, pilots and non-pilots, owners and non-owners who cherish the proud heritage of military aircraft are invited to join the EAA Warbirds ranks. Join and receive Warbirds magazine (eight times per year) and Warbirds newsletter (four times per year).

I’d like to know how you can tell the tailwheel was not locked on landing from that video. Seeing as how the video doesn’t show the landing.

I love seeing old aeroplanes fly but this is one of a small number that is on my list of “should not be flown due to historic value”.

I know someone who bid 1000 quid on this at the Strathallan auction, gave up at that point, and it went for 1200. It is in exactly the same condition today, asking price $99,000.
