As always with Wiki maybe a good starting place but should always be taken with a good dose of caution and important “facts” checked elsewhere.

There are people who go through changing things for the “fun” of it.

There are also people, fortunately, who troll through putting these things right.
Take a look at a number of entry histories and you will see this.

and a joke in very poor taste referring to the (then) recent accident at nearby Alton Towers.

Yes it was in very poor taste and inappropriate for the occasion but it made me laugh. He did apologies latter.

Interestingly enough it has become even more relevant in the light of recent events, how safe are fun fairs and pleasure parks in comparison to air shows?

It was our first visit to Legends and I did find the continuous commentary irritating.

I was amazed at RIAT, again a first visit, where they actually play pop music. This site is truly huge and surely the enclosures could have a separate system for commentary without the pop music and keep the music for the show side.

Agree if you feel strongly you should contact the organisers and I will about this and the virtual monopoly food franchise at Duxford. However, this is a forum where we come together to discuss such things to gauge how others feel, it is only whining if you disagree. If I disagree with somebody’s view I still want to hear it to help form my own view or point out where I am wrong. That is what forums are for.

Moggy I fully understand what you say about the equipment, the end result and how often you will actually listen/view it, and you are quite right.

I can go on the internet and large numbers of people are kind enough to post truly excellent pictures for us to enjoy. So why do I bother to take my own? Because somehow it is different that you actually took the picture and captured the moment and it is a tangible record that you were there and saw this. So when all air shows have stopped and all these wonderful aeroplanes are grounded I can show my grandchildren, this is the Vulcan flying past under me at Beachy Head, I was there, and wipe the tear from my eye.

Attended Legends Friday, Sat and SUN.

Friday is a must in my view we saw different displays to the show days.
On airshow days the GA park extended right down the field not so many Friday.
There are things to do for the family if they are not interested in the flying, play areas, hangers. Land Warfare etc Plenty of room for picnics. But it is not compulsory to bring the family. Interesting your children in air shows is solely your responsibility and the people we moan about have parents who are not really interested it is just a day out. Of course the shows need the money.
One company seems to hold the franchise for the vast majority of food and IMHO is very poor and therefore expensive. The coffee is well terrible.
At other airshows, Coventry and RIAT there was very good food and coffee at reasonable prices. RIAT has large varied selection.
Excellent coffee can be found in the FOD tent. The PIMMS burgers were very good and same price as the other vendor.

We had a Gold for one day but there were even children in there, there are no children tickets, and one came down and stood at the front. IMHO certainly not worth the money, catering staff disinterested and coffee terrible. Certainly will not do that again really it is worse than FOD as at least there you can get decent coffee , other drinks and biscuits.

In general other than RIAT we do find the lack of control of children at the crowd line a day spoiler.
In FRIAT stand had to ask a lady sitting three seats down to stop “talking” to somebody two rows back whilst flying was taking place as she was ruining the sound on the video.
The FRIAT enclosure and the extra access this gets you is well worth the expense with dedicated good food and coffee, left luggage and undercover seating area. Best pictures in my view were taken from the rope line not in the stand, so bring chairs just the same.
Despite being on site for three days hardly saw any of the static/stalls etc which extend most of the length of the field there is loads to entertain the rest of the family.

I found the commentary annoying at Legends for all the reasons already given. At RIAT it is worse they actually play pop music!! Need to split the Tannoy system into 2 one for the static with music and the second in the various enclosures with just the commentary.

I am very lucky my wife takes a keen interest and always joins me and enjoys the show and listens to me rambling on and on.

As for cost the term is relative to your personal circumstances. But as has been said airshows are actually cheap when compared with other forms of entertainment and when you take into account the cost of running the machines we are interested in they are very cheap. If you cannot afford it then just like anything else you cannot afford you have to go without. I cannot afford the car I would like but I do not go down the show room and steal one.

I was very surprised at the naughty fields at RIAT as the owners of the fields are taking money and they are clearly in the “danger” zone. Good luck with that with the insurance company if there was ever an accident but then they are probably not insured. One wonders what the situation is with regard to planning use as well.

This, of course, has all been discussed endlessly before and we all have our own views.

Mine is “There is no such thing as a free lunch” if you want to continue to see these aeroplanes fly you need, in fact, must pay.

Always make a contribution when visiting “free” museums. The only place I wouldn’t make a contribution is IWM North it is truly appalling. Seriously if I had paid to get in I would have asked for my money back.

My family used to go to Biggin Hill in the late fifties and sixties it was a totally different world then and I do not just mean the displays. My brother and I went in our school uniforms complete with caps!!

    Isn’t there also a replica P51?

The pictures, video and the model of what was a massive site are well worth seeing.

Well, Merlin70, I certainly agree with all of that and obviously especially within the contexts of technical documents and any public media, with all due respect that wasn’t my point.

This is an open forum which means we have people on here from all walks of life, of all ages and with vastly different educational backgrounds. They come here because of their mutual interest in aviation and I personally do not think it right to basically poke fun at people over their correct use of English and English grammar within an aviation thread. Like this post it does not actually add anything related to the subject of thread. Sometimes my posts are not as I would personally like them but do not feel it is worth spending more time on them.

Yes with spell checkers today it does make you wonder how incorrectly spelt words can crop up. I had a letter some years ago from Santander which contained several spelling mistakes and scanned as if it had been written by a 10 year old.

    Just hang on one minut.
    Just need to chek sumthing.

Yep Im in the rite place Key Aviation Forum.

    Yep Historik Aviation.

For a minut their I thought I had strayed onto the Greengrocers Forum.

I cum here cause Im interested in and wont to learn from other membrs about historik ‘planes. If I was interested in English gramer and speling I would go sumwhere diferent.
If the meening is cleer it dosnt mater one tuppeny f@+& how it is spelt or if the punctuation is correct.

Gramer/spelling police what is your point? Have you added anything to the subject of the thread? Dos it make u feel superior?

If greengrocers aphostrefies wory you so much take it to Generel for a discussion.

Many on here have all sort’s of problem’s which u are quite rightly unaware ov in my view as long as a post is understandable then leave well alone.

Jack ignore these self elected police I understood perfectly what you said, I am starting to struggle to spell, or at times even recall, even the simplest of words and have to look them up, this can also be embarasing in a live conversation.

I was taught that “aeroplane” should be shortened to “‘plane”, however, common usage over the intervening n years has made “plane” acceptable.

There, got a aeroplane reference in. (yes I know grates doesn’t it):D

There you are guys knock yourselves out.

    Old but not sad!!!:D

Nice of you to think so Charlie, we don’t seem to disagree on much. 🙂

I find the older I get the more I see our engineering heritage being destroyed or thrown away the sadder I get.

I’m with TA on this. Basic rule of advertising clear, concise and accurate. Full location and date should be clearly on front including post code. Often find many do not quote postcode. You should not have to go searching for this basic info.

    Sad old man.

Popped over to pprune and was rather surprised to find a somewhat different approach being taken. They seem to give free reign.

Whilst it was interesting to read some of the hopefully professional posts, after all we are human and like to analyse, I still prefer the approach taken here, we must consider the feelings of all involved over our interest. The mods are doing a good job IMHO.
