One of my favourites! Mel Brooks is great, even when not at his best. I still savour the old TV series with Richard Greene and Alan Wheatley as the Sherriff, Donald Pleasence as his brother, Alexander Gauge as a huge Friar and the silky Pat Driscoll as maid Marian. It is so fifties! I’ll bet there a clip or two on You Tube.

As I indicated earlier you are wearing rose-coloured spectacles in respect of the benefits accruing to Scotland from the oil. You would have been in deficit for all but 4 of the last 30 years even if you had taken 92% of all the revenue. And you are now taking about 4 times the revenue in the annual devolution payments from Whitehall.

In fact the majority of Scots don’t want independence – they know which side their bread is buttered, canny that they are. They will whinge daily about the Sassenachs but never give up the billions they squeeze out of Whitehall, for the privilege. And whilst our taxes help them to a better education and health service why should they?

Al – that sounds like a good offer. Oil revenues are budgeted at about £8.5billion this year so 92% of that is about £7.8 billion. Scotland costs Central Government about £33 billion currently so you can have the oil and save the Central Government cash.

There was a report a couple of years ago which, if memory serves correctly, stated that even if Scotland had kept all the revenue from oil since 1980 it still would have been in deficit for all but 4 of the years.

That is undeniable – I was just wondering if that reality had crossed many peoples’ minds….
