french market always was for simpler design, i mean they didnt made f-4s, Mig-25s, f-15s, su-27s, etc.., there market was mirage3s, f-16, mig-21, etc..

now, saying that the typhoon is an counter to the f-16 have no sense, is more a counter of the f-15, su-27 or f-22

then what the hell they were thinking to go in that market, when they did very well with the traditional design philosophy????

    the rafale, ahhh the rafale

In the 60s was a competiton between Mirage 3 and Mig-21, you cant count the F-4 due it size and cost, the 21s were the commies

In the 70s was the F1 vs mig-23, the f-15 was -is- pretty costly, the 23 were the commies

Now, again the M2000 didnt had western competition in the 80s, the f16, cant match the high altitude fighter-interceptor role, dont know if the tornado could, but by that time the tornado was a outdated design, besides the torny is more in the f-15 leage, the commie counter part was the mig-29, so some countries that had the f-16, also wanted the M2000, coz the 16 isnt a real counter to the fulcrum -which is more a pocked f-15-, thats the reason why some f-16 users also wanted the M2000…despite the ridiculous high price……ohh it had a western counter…the f-18…ermmm…yeah…..sure……

i think that the french did the right thing getting not involved into the Tornado project, the M2000 was a great success

but was a bad idea to make an almost clone of the Typhoon, both the Rafale and EF are almost the same, the winning hand was for the EF, because more countries were involved

Im pretty sure that if they would made a simpler and different plane like the Gripen, that would be cheaper due the experience and infrestructure, now many air forces would have it, maybe a resurection of the mirage 3,actually the best choice would have been an aliance with saab

If you see the sales of the mirage 3, where went all that market?, the price of the modern jets are too much for many air forces, the planes are getting overpriced and overcomplicated, crappy cold war competition, why the french didnt see that?

well, yes Garry, you are right about that, but i dont see any great technologic challenge to increase the range of a subsonic missile, -a high supersonic is a big trouble-, of course to increase the size of the missile is the most obvious solution

but i think that the real news here are the famous ionic devices that supposely decrease the rcs of the missile, if such device works -and it seems since is already in two missiles, and maybe in other systems- then they can avoid any super-duper tax costing and even uneffective pasive concept to achieve a low rcs

and can be installed in any plane, missile, etc whitout a great change in it design -besides i think that the device only works in the front plane of the missile-

just another subsonic cruiser missile, big deal

anyway, supossely this missile is linked with some new gizmo named maraburu or something like that, which use the already well known ionization concept to reduce it rcs, even a russian colonel, sargent, comodore or whatever said that, so that gizmo exist??

dont know if is a copy of the b-2, just know that is a design that follow the simple rules for a furtive plane, maybe it will end with vertical tails?, dont know, it will be real?, dont know…if they finish making a smooth lift body that could remember you the f-117 -remember that the f-117 is no-way a lift body- then the russians will have a very, very interesting design

also you cant say that the skat is completelly a b-2, the lower surface looks to me almost flat, the b-2 have a curve shape in the lower aerodynamic surface, is better to have an almost flat surface, like the f-117

about the yaks fsw, we will see, but until now neither bird of prey, x-47,x45, etec, etc have fsw despite the very good aerodynamic features at transonic speed…….., is more probable that yaks team are looking for a better performance of a plane, in the end stealth isnt everything, maybe is a low level penetrator, in which a radar stealth design isnt so critical -like the agm-129 that is a pretty good radar returner just with some stealth tweaks-

SOC, if FSW have stealth features, then we should watch in the sky many FSW UAVs, because FSW is more suitable to subsonic speed

FSW dont have stealth features, the believe of some guys that the reflected waves are absobed by the fuselage are far from the reallity, because to do that you need an impossible angle due to the problems of the aspect ratio, , the leading edge perimeter is shorter, increasing the density of the wave returned -with the same span compared of a conventional wing-, actually fsw increase the radar signature returning the wave to the source, FSW is more efficient as a lifter at near supersonic speed than rectangular wings, but also have it structural problems, you dont see any extensive program based on stealth features that follow fsw-even with its aerodynamical features- ,guess why..

just try to draw a normal line from the 3/4 external portion of the s-47 fsw -taking the leading edge angle and taking in consideration that is a high wing and the nose and fuselage is a a lower level-, that wont work to hide it from the radars

sferrin, thats all that you can say?, i mean …”how do u know it?”, just try to learn some EM basic theories, stealth isnt a super-gizmo concept that cant be understanded, thats the reason why ppl make a lot of missunderstanding about this techs

still we must wait if this thing come true, but is obvious that the russians have the knowledge to make a stealth plane, im not so surprised about that, but until now , all their “stealth” projects were the 1.44 and s-47 -at least what i know-…that never were based on that concept -no matter what said some russian media-, for example was funny to read that FSW was ideal to the radar signature of the s-47, but the “skat” follow very well all the rules for low radar detection

to all, between Mig and Sukhoi, which company have more interest to develop UAVs?, is clear that Mig is dead on fighters and manned military planes, but UAVs could the the key of it future, there is some preference of the russian goverment in one company in this market?

ok, i just came here, just take a look, didnt want get into this thread, but is obvious that a fan eye is different with an engieneer eye..just found that dumd commentaries…”ity looks ugly, fat, etc” without any sustance

the stealth design is much -MUCH- better than the barracuda and in some aspects better than the x-45, it just follow simple rules for a stealth plane, avoid internal angles, low wing configuration, avoid surfaces pointing downwards, the stuff is big, dont know about the operational weights, anyone could tell me??, anyway is still a mockup, but the design is very good

i dont think that russians needs another boomer, maybe a modified tu160russians needs speed, so forget about a b-2

the duty of the b-2 and the general US boomer air force is to hit the targets missed by the SLBMs -that will miss-, so a b-2 isnt designed to get into a soviet union filled by long wave radars that can direct pathetic migs-21 to down a billion dollar plane, the b-2 duty is basically to hunt the russian mobile ICBMs of course not as a first strike, but these mobile plataforms will survive the first nuke strike, when all the radar infrastructure is ruined, the b-2 can get inside to hunt down the mobile ICBMs -trying to avoid mobile SAMs-, is a post dooms-day weapon

the russians instead dont have many SLBMs, mostly precise ICBMs, so they never have needed a huge b-52 air force, the tu-160 cruising at M2 is a great platform to launch missileas as a first striker, but i never have understood if is a pre-empive attack weapon or a post nuke strike “corrector”, because is most likely that the tu-95s are for that

    http://paralay.com/t60/pakda1.gif

paralay, that is a speculation or a real design???

its interesting but maybe the market of bombers will increase in the next years -well, after 25 years- by the ABM tech

well if canards, tailplanes or whatever are aligned -like canards on the su-30- there isnt difference, canards, in general are smaller than tailplanes so that could be even better for a stealth design, but the point is that if you increase the number of control surface, you increase radar reflective behaviour

and dont trust in TV, because full syntetic stability isnt practical, you need your engines to thrust the plane, but you cant use them completely for stabilization, that decrease the general performance of a plane, you need aerodynamics

i think that there is a missinterpretation about all of the cannards-rcs, if you put huge cannards to a standar desing -like that xperimental f-15- you increase rcs, because now you have more surfaces that move, but if you keep the same number of surfaces -delta cannard- you dont increase the rcs

modern european planes have cannards, they suit very well with unstable-delta combo design

the f22 dont have cannards…..bad idea for supercruiser -too much drag over the wing and fuselage-

Idiots are the guys that started with that cannards-bad rcs issue….-that myth have now many years-

Flanker man, im talking about fighters, yes russians have a nice experience in big deltas, but in bombers and transport planes….and prototipes, the aerodesign of a fighter is a bit more complex, because are more requirements, dont know how the russians are good to handle deltas at high aoa ,yes some guys could start with the TVC stuff, but im sure that the russians WANT high aerodynamical sustentable AoA and not only a mechanical one

dont know the performance of the mig144, if the investigations and the prototipe was good enough, maybe they could consider that design, but i doubt that the 144 would reached it design goals

they must make some sacrifices, they cant make a wonder plane -btw the f22isnt a wonder plane, so isnt a big deal- i think will be “sacrifices” on supercruiser -i mean range , not speed-, the plane wont have internal bay, and other things, that anyway seems unpractical

hmmm.. at last have some free time in came again… and again the pakfa stuff 😀

about the f22 nozzles ir supresion, it was obvious, that stuff was not designed for ir stealth, any good engineer can see that, lol i remember when i said my opininion and ended fighting against bunch of fanboys that believed blindly about that myth

about the topic, im really not sure that the pakfa will be a delta, russians dont have a lot of experience on big deltas, is more probably that the wing will be like the su-27 -if will be a +15 tons design-, maybe a delta on a smaller plane, anyway a 5th generation plane can be designed from the 27 layout, is more probable that will be a stealthed su-27, like the f23, but with conventional wings, anyway we must wait the market

the declassified values for each aircraft are 22 1.58 with f119, and 23 1.4 with 119, the 1.6 of the 23 is the famous speculation, neither of both had values of f120 -but were tested-and it stated M1.8 or around

bring it on, come on thats the typical “with special materials blah, blah, blah”, lol, if that is all now all we should be designers, actually in engienreeng the important concepts are the simpler, for example what is more effective your “microns coating” and all that stuff for IR signature, or just to increase the outlet area to reduce the pressure -and temperature- of the gases? (like in f23 and b-2), get some education first before to read all that rubish

come on sferrin, dont you remember that thread?, is happening again…
