Giving up my seat to an old boy on the bus while a load of teenagers just sat gawping at him, then letting go of the pole I was holding onto to wave at a toddler I know and dropping my shopping all over the floor .

No thank God,and I’d probably run a mile if I did.Usually I do the jam-jar and piece of card routine with spiders, and frequently have to do this with any spiders at church as the minister’s scared of them, even though he’s older than me.Is it right that you can tell if it’s a false widow because it looks really unusual? In that case any odd-looking spiders I come across will be getting a visit from kindly old Dr. Foot,to quote Homer Simpson .

It is a sad moment when anybody dies from whatever cause, but I question the hysteria created by the world’s press over a pop-star.

Steve Rowell notes an MJ big fan at the White House. Congress holds a moment of silence for an entertainer. The world goes wild with grief.

How about a ‘moment of silence’ for all the troops who have died and are still dying in Afghanistan and Iraq in order we are able to have our freedom to live our comfortable lives. Have not these men and women given that much more?

How right you are. It’s not much I know, but the Sky news website has a Roll of Honour of the troops killed this year in Afghanistan, with a photo and a small piece of writing about each of them.Just seeing their ages is enough to make you weep .

I’m completely in favour of touching if the aircraft is robust enough, provided you can prevent schoolkids bashing the living daylights out of it.I was delighted to be able to stroke the Sunderland at IWM Duxford and discover that the metal felt about as substantial as my Granny’s biscuit tin .

What a remarkable life,it would have been great to hear one of his talks for schoolchildren.I felt quite old when I woke up this morning, but maybe it’s not actually that bad ! And how typical of that generation to be so modest.R.I.P. a wonderful old gentleman.

You’re right about how modest his generation was about their courage.Just last week I was talking to an old boy in the queue in the supermarket who told me he’d been on a ship that was torpedoed in an Atlantic convoy and still had nightmares about it.What a debt we owe these men .
