BBMF’s PZ865 used to race in a royal blue/white trim scheme in it’s civilian days, is this what you’re thinking of perhaps?
Good lord, you look away from here for five minutes..!
Well, I think everything I think has already been said. Here are my random thoughts on this anyway-
‘611 is best off where and how she is now-she’ll last damn near forever that way.
No, ‘474 can’t go on forever, but as it’s only really a dodgy landing or some git at the MoD that will finish her off in anything like the near future, I don’t think we need worry about replacing her just yet!
Re. resparring ‘611, just like that, down here at St Athan; wasn’t the special steel used for ‘474 the last of a batch left over from doing the Shacks? So perhaps the very material to do this job is no longer easily available, for a start.
If ‘611 was restored to fly, she’d need to be stripped right down to her bones and rebuilt; not even thinking about corrosion for a minute, ‘611 engineer Ian Hickling has said about how the aircraft was neither properly taken apart or put back together again on her move from Scampton, so that fact alone would mean having to start from scratch with every part of her ‘just in case’. Too many people seem to be fooled by a high-speed taxy run or two that ‘611 could just lift off into the air and get straight on with it.
I really don’t think the UK will support 2 flying Lancs.
Much else as the place has to offer, if ‘611 flies, East Kirkby loses it’s major attraction, and could then possibly face financial problems. And if ‘611 is living away and playing, then costs would go through the roof, furthering the money woes.
There’s a lot else to say, buy really, things are best left as they are.
Wow, that last Lanc one is a cracker! 😀 😀 😀 😀
This is off the top of my head, but I believe a glossy finish is actually correct for the higher altitude, PR blue Spits isn’t it?
But otherwise, I think that all BBMF machines will be going into a satin finish, if they haven’t already. Even after a few years wear, I still think this is the best looking scheme that ‘474 has worn.
Now, about that ‘S-Sugar’ paint scheme… 😉 Seriously though, imagine the mutual publicity for Hendon and the BBMF, if ‘474 were to be painted as the legendary ‘Sugar’. 😀
All very nice, thank you!
Hurrah for satin paint!
They’d better splash some over that fuselage joint sealing tape though…
Crikey, our webmaster is like a bus-you wait and wait and wait, and then loads come along at once!
Just kidding, it’s great to hear that this place is here to stay, and if they need to fiddle around a bit from a tech point of view, then so be it-we get a heck of a lot here for nowt’, and all power to them for that.
We may all have a whinge sometimes, but seriously, cheers Key.
😉
Years ago, the Lanc roared over my house and circled a few times in the distance, obviously using Tredegar House here in Newport as a turning point, and it was like having her all to myself-I nearly wet myself! For all the displays I’ve seen her at, there’s nothing quite like having her in your own airspace!!! 😀 😀 😀
You can get more babies in the belly of a Lancaster than the belly of a woman, but I guess congrats are still in order!!! 😉
VERY nice!!! 😀 😀 😀
Bl**dy Reds, now they’re trying to get into the car parks to stop me leaving when they’re on!
I agree-and have said here before-that the Valiant would be better off at Cossy, with the resultant space being very useful in the getting-crowded Bomber Hall.
Handbrake off, and just shove it down a hill in gear…
From the Linc Lanc Association website-
News Flash: dated 28th August 03
Bad news on the Lancaster front….the tail leg is still causing problems. After flying back from Norwich it had to land at Waddington because of the wind direction. There was a quite bad tail wheel shimmy felt through the aircraft. It looks as though there is some side play in the leg caused by the mountings. British Aerospace are coming to look at the whole mounting assembly but it could be out of action for some time. Will let you know as I do. Definitely off for this weekend, Dakota is doing East Kirby Friday night instead.
🙁
Just ‘bumping’ this in case Peter’s not seen it yet.
I just typed ‘Ian Allan Publishing’ into Google and found this page for you, maybe it will help-
