‘…a fairly good facsimilie of a Halifax.’

‘…none of them make the displayed aircraft a Halifax.’

    ‘Nuff said, really.

If you want a resonable look at the Striling bits held by the RAF Museum, you want to check out the souvenir video that they sell, where you get to see ‘behind the scenes’ a little.

Put like that my friend, I’ll happily agree with you.

Well, it would be interesting to have a complete, original Halifax on it wheels in pristine condition to compare to the Airfix job at Elvington, and to see which one got the most visitors over a year…those dear old Halifax boys get emotional over the ersatz Hallybag because unfortunately, there’s nothing else for them to look at; if that changes one day, we’ll see just how important the kit of mismatched parts is then!

Hee hee, this one just runs and runs, doesn’t it?! 😉

    What…you mean…Sean Connery ISN’T James Bond? 😮

I agree that aircraft should always retain their own serial, even if ‘playing’ another part-PA474 being a great example. No matter what squadron, no matter what individual aircraft she’s portraying, ‘474 she is, and ‘474 it says on the side.

The CWH Lanc is a good example of the opposite-you’d think the ‘Mynarski’ Lancaster had come back to life to listen to them sometimes; it has FM213 painted on it, which is ain’t, and never will be.

I don’t agree that the Friday 13th replica Halifax is valuable, as we’d otherwise not be able to see a Halifax-there’s been one oin hendon for years y’know, albeit a tad manky looking…I’m afraid I lump that half real, half fake, bag of leftovers ‘Halifax’ straight into the same bin as all the fibreglass Spitfires-good for window dressing and making little kids go ‘ooh!’ only.

The Valiant, coming out of the Bomber Hall? Good grief! God knows what they’ll have to do to poor old ‘Sugar’ this time to get the Valiant out of there…who’s daft idea was it to entomb all those aircraft in a huge building with a little door at the back, anyway?!!!

Not sure I can see the Valiant moving somehow, though I would welcome it-the Bomber Hall could do with some re-jigging, particularly at that end; although interesting for example, the Barnes Wallis office display takes up loads of space, space that could be better used for more airframes, such as the eventually restored Hampden. And maybe even a chunk of Stirling, too!

I think the BoB Hall has had more than it’s fair share of new displays/’experiences’ etc over the years, to the neglect of the Bomber Hall which seems to have remained fairly samey for a very long time. Even then, the exhibits within are less than ideally displayed in my opinion; the B-17 should look like one of ours if it’s going to be in there, and you all know my opinions on that poor Lancaster having it’s tail in the air like some glorified Airfix kit!

The current audio/visual presentation in the BoB Hall is excellent-some really good thinking now could present something similar in the much-neglected Bomber Hall.

“A lot of the big shows are so much hassle (RIAT) or have become so repetitive (Duxford) or so expensive (both) I don’t want to bother any more”

    Couldn’t agree more.

Yes, good and stirring stuff, that also appears in Garbett & Goulding’s ‘Lancaster At War 2’.

Fluffy, although a change is still a way off yet, do the BBMF ground crew/personnel ever have an inkling of what the Lanc’s new markings will be each time? I mean, how much of a ‘secret’ is it when it’s due?

    Cheers!

    (PS Hendon’s ‘S-Sugar’ please!!!) 😉

    That’s PA47 4, of course!

Lots of people just don’t get it that it can be very dangerous to operate a large tail wheel aircraft like a Lanc, at light loads, with a high crosswind-you’re just asking for the beautiful, precious aircraft to go sideways across the runway and leave it’s undercarriage in the grass somewhere. PA474 has already had a few dodgy landings in her time, so in my opinion, if it’s too windy, then she can always fly another day. 🙂

Peter-no, my shed is just full of spiders! And fifteen Merlin engines still in their cases, three H2S blisters, nine Lancaster main spars and a turnip…anyway, I was grinning at your use of the dread word ‘replica’ re. that overgrown Airfix kit at Elvington!

    😉

Absolutely top-class analysis Steve, very well done.

As I’ve said before, my regular purchasing of Flypast stopped ages ago, and now I’m just a Smiths browser/occasional buyer, if there’s an article I want to file away for future reference. I really disliked the massive sudden swing over to jets under Ken Delve, which does seem to have been sorted out a little since Ken Ellis returned. I’ve NEVER bought a copy of Aeroplane Monthly just browsed it in the shop now and then, and would consider myself ‘loyal’ to Flypast even if I don’t buy it regularly anymore.

Re. this online debate, I would suspect that the elusive Mr Webmaster doesn’t join in simply because it would become a pretty endless debate, and might well turn out to be something they just don’t want to go into.

    BUT:

    Why the censorship? 😡
