    RE: DONUTS

Why is it, when you buy a polystyrene cup of something they laughingly call ‘tea’ or ‘coffee’, it’s either freezing cold or so damn hot it causes it’s own nuclear reaction when you take off the little lid?!!!

The auction site was, not surprisingly, Ebay.

I wonder which bit of the wing was damaged then-the grey leading edges, like the little grey cap on the nose, are made of a different, even more heat resistant material to the tiles over the rest of the Orbiter, as they are the parts which get the hottest. I guess if that wing leading edge were damaged, the heat would kind of spread through and into the wing, thus raising your readings in the left main wheel bay etc.

Can’t answer your questions mate, but no doubt the moving of the Vimy will give them all the excuse they need to further drag the Lancaster left, right and centre, if not putting the whole thing in a cardboard box marked ‘not very important anymore’.

Well I know this is pretty morbid, but CNN online are reporting that so far a thigh bone, skull and ‘badly burned torso’ have been found, as well as the helmet/patches etc.

I think the ‘explosion’ sounds could easily be either sonic booms, normal for the shuttle on re-entry, or simply the sounds of it breaking up at such high velocity. It seems fairly likely already about the wing damage, doesn’t it?

Having seen it on the TV news now, it looks like it just broke up-certainly no ‘explosion’ or any such. Question is, why? Heat shield failure? Strutural failure? Sounds like it’s one or the other.

Just been following the news online on various news sites, sad stuff. Sounds for now like it just broke up during re-entry-maybe the crew this time won’t have known so much about it, unlike with Challenger when they were alive after the explosion…

I see some places are talking about a chunk of tank insulation that came off and hit the shuttle’s wing on take off, don’t know if this is relevant to the break up though?

    RE: Instrument?

I didn’t say that mine WAS a Lanc one, just that it looked the same! It’s a type VII A, electric, 6A/1559. Do we know what this is more likely to be really from, then?! I’m intrigued now!

Well, tell him to be careful with it, or it will nuke his unmentionables and give his offspring three heads or something!

The serial No.on my Lanc-style one here on my desk is 6A/1559. I used to have a good reference for all these numbers, but sadly lost it in a move some years back. Anyone else?

    RE: Pyrotechnics?

Personally, I regard it as pretty much a waste of time.

I saw the Lancaster trash a supercharger bearing once over Southend, making a lovely stream of smoke and sparks…quite enough pyrotechnics for me, thanks!!!

Peter, LOL, I’m not tight, I just like picking up tons of ‘picnic’ stuff for next to nothing! It’s the only way to cope with your average UK airshow weather- stuff yourself silly!!!

Anyway, I’m going to sneak into Ashley’s airshow hamper next time-smoked salmon! For an airshow!!!

Definitely only stuff of my own taking! Cold sausage sarnies, cheapo jam tarts, cheapo choccy bars, loads of cheapo crisps, cheapo bottles of pop…get the picture?!

You see, you thought I was called ‘Lancman’ due to my love of a particular aircraft type, but actually, it’s down to my cavernous bomb bay!!!

Yeah, all the old instruments are radioactive to some dregree or other, but I don’t think we’re all going to mutate or lose our hair if we happen to have a Lanc RPM gauge sat on top of our PC’s!!!

    …at least, I hope not!!!

Peter-no poking tongue intended mate, just sharing a happy memory!

(If it helps, I got a terribly sunburned ear on the first of the four days!!!)
