    RE: Lancaster G George

There’s no need to be so snappy-I was merely saying that among die-hard Lanc enthusiasts, ‘George’ was information enough.

Check your radiator temperatures, you need to chill out a bit!

Anyone who dismisses the Lancaster as a boring display item simply because it’s not flown like a Tazmanian Devil is at the helm is, in my opinion, a bit sad…

This all goes back to a point I’ve made before-that is, the BBMF have been around so long, and appear at so many shows each year, people very much take them for granted.

    That’s a LANCASTER for God’s sake!!!

I saw the Lanc do it’s famous cross-country routine at Mildenhall years back-THAT was fun to see!

I never did get that pair clean after that…

Well, let’s remember how long that the BBMF aircraft have lasted-and will continue to last-fatigue wise, shall we? Then, when they are still flying around in 50 years time and a lot of the more energetic, private operators have grounded their aircraft for fatigue reasons, we’ll see who is ‘dull’.

There’s absolutely no need to fly your warbird around the sky like a muppet-I’ve paid to SEE the damn thing, after all!

Okay, if it’s one of those Spitfires where only the maker’s plate is more than 18 months old, fine, do with it what you will, but the more genuine warbirds out there should only ever be flown with dignity, and respect-not pratted about the sky. It’s ultimately wearing for the aircraft, and has also caused too many accidents in the past.

…and when I’m remembering 56,000 men of Bomber Command, or the young lads in the BoB, I’d like to do it without seeing excessive aerobatics set to stupid music!

Lastly, mass formations of every single available warbird on the continent to end a show have no appeal to me whatsoever-what’s the point, seeing so many disparate types crammed in and chugging along together? Nothing! Just a self-gloryfying pat on the back for certain shows, that’s all it is.

Bet my fatigue index is lower than yours!!!!

Well, given the relatively few Lancasters that we have left in the world, any Lanc enthusiast even vaguely worth his salt should know straight away which Lanc is meant by ‘George’, just like Hendon’s ‘Sugar’. Anyway, ‘George’ is W4783, and he lives in Australia, where he’s been since the end of his war. He’s a high-scoring, ex-operational Lanc, from 460 sqdn.

Yes, I’d like to know, too-all I know, as Peter has said, is that she was dismantled and removed from her display space, for restoration. Anyone know anything?

    RE: NX611

I think your dad may be right Peter-and to be honest, I think it’s a valid opinion, because although Fred was talking about the consequences of the aircraft being lost in an accident, even once ‘611 was regularly airworthy, she’d very most likely not be able to operate out of East Kirkby, meaning the museum there as it is established would lose by far it’s biggest attraction.

All the while we’ve got one flying Lancaster in the UK, I think ‘611 is safe, sound and a damn good attraction where and as she is, happily trundling about and revving her engines for the punters!

Should, heaven forbid, anything ever happen to PA474, then maybe they should look at the situation again…

Well, even though they are now free entry, most museums still have collection boxes of some sort or other, so do what I do-USE ‘EM!

    RE: Another Lancaster restored..!

    Good stuff!

Talking of new black paint, what a shame that the bods at Hendon have taken to repainting random bits of S-Sugar in differing shades of black-she’s starting to look a bit sad, which is why I think she should come off display for a full corrosion job/repaint etc. She is, after all, certainly the flagship of the Bomber Hall, and one of THE major attractions for the museum also.
If they’d thought about it a bit, they could have taken her out and off to Cosford or whatever first, and while she was gone, use that time for all the recent aircraft movements that instead, as just detailed in ‘FlyPast’, necessitated her being dragged all over the shop on wheels!

I remember when the Southampton fuselage came in-they took her port outer wing off for that, which at least was fascinating to study at close quarters for a few hours!

50 hours maintenance for every 1 hour flight time? What the hell are they doing to the poor thing?!!!

Peter, good to that hear you may be getting something sorted for your sparkers!

    “…A Sunderland at Legends, Imagine…”

Or, imagine, an airshow outside of Cambridgeshire and over to the West of the country which ISN’T bloody Leg-ends!!!

    RE: Wish List

Leg-ends has quite enough content as it is, and it’s about time some of it was sent elsewhere in the damn country! The whole world doesn’t revolve around Duxford you know!

    But to answer the question…

Fifteen Lancasters, and a Vulcan for luck, ta!

That’s what the’ve done with NX611, too-they didn’t fancy pumping fuel back and forth through the fuselage!
