RE: Interesting website
Good God, that’s a tidy looking Wimpey!!! Quick, fetch the cranes and airbags!!! 😀
RE: Airshow Enjoyment – what do you enjoy about airshows?
Shame on you. x(
RE: Lancaster Tailfins-February ‘FlyPast’
Tell me about it!
RE: YIIIPPPEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great to hear that mate, I’m glad you’ve enjoyed it as much as I did. A near faultless video really-I’m just not sure I need to see that old lady get her lipstick all over the bomb aimers bubble quite so much though!!!
Those tail-high runs are fantastic, there’s just something about it all, even though we’re so used to seeing ‘474 and ‘213 go about their stuff.
I reckon those two Chatterton’s are ruddy marvelous, too!
RE: Project FM159
That last suggestion is probably your best bet-the BBMF are usually very helpful with stuff like that.
RE: Project FM159
It wasn’t the company I was thinking of, but the one Der refers to is ‘Retro Track & Air Ltd’, in the Cotswolds, UK, who have worked on Merlins for the BBMF and Lanc NX611 too, I believe, among many others. They’re the ones with the great little test-bed on the back of a truck, if that rings any bells with anyone! The full feature is in the September 2002 FlyPast, contact them at-01453 545360, email retrotrackandair@aol.com
RE: Project FM159
What was the name of that Merlin specialist in Jersey, anyone remember? Maybe they could help?
RE: Airshow Irritations!
In no particular order…
1.THOSE people with their bloody windbreaks!!!
2.The total lack of any decent airshow, warbirds or otherwise, in the west;
3.Mass formations of totally unconnected warbird types; I mean, what’s the point? Really?
4.Certain places having several samey show a year, when…see 2!
5.Craft/clothes stalls-sod off back to your Saturday markets and leave us to our inflatable Hawks and stuff!!!
6.HIM. You know the one. His wife wears stillettos in the mud, and he’s got two screaming brats which he spends all day putting on his shoulders in turn and informing that every Hurricane is a Spitfire etc etc. Probably guilty of point 1, too!
7.Toilets. You, Joe Airshow Organiser-Bloggs, are expecting x-thousand people. That also means x-thousand bladders you moron!!!
8.People who take the sight of the BBMF for granted!!!
Enough!
RE: Peter-‘Just Jane’ video
Hang in there mate, I’m sure our one remaining postman will manage to limp to the nearest cargo ship with your video before too much longer!!!
RE: Scrapheap Challenge UK v USA v France
Yes Bob, I saw this too! I’m quite a fan of ‘Scrappie’, although it’s not quite as hot as it used to be. This was something else though-I thought all three aircraft were quite amazing, no matter how well they eventually performed!
RE: So flight-sims are for kids right? Wrong! Zerstorer anyone!!!
It’s okay Phantom, I didn’t regard your comments as an ‘outburst’ mate! I’ve had a quick check, and sure enough, there’s at least one P40 available to download for Fighter Squadron!
Munnst, I’ve tried ‘IL2’, and can tell you that with ALL the available patches, plane packs, terrain packs, base packs, etc, etc etc, ETC, (ad infinitum, ad absurdum!) FS still rules! It’s kinda like a well-kept secret though!
RE: They all look good !
Absolutely!
But following on from what munnst said, we EASILY have the best looking of the two ‘flyers’ by far! While it’s great that the CWH Lanc is alive and kicking, it really has always looked dreadful finish-wise, from day one.
Mentioning ‘sterile dust traps’, I SO want to see ‘474 one day painted up as Hendon’s ‘Sugar’, it would look superb, though I doubt they’d paint her as a still-existing aircraft.
RE: They all look good !
Well, it matters when people keep spouting incorrect assumptions as ‘fact’, yes! But in my eyes, only from the point of view that it’s uually said in some way to detract from ‘474-‘Oh, it’s got Lincoln rudders, it’s wrong’ sort of a thing.
Of course we’re lucky to have her-I actually think we take her a little for granted sometimes, as she’s simply been around, at everything, forever!
RE: So flight-sims are for kids right? Wrong! Zerstorer anyone!!!
I’m sure there’s a P40 out there somewhere-not too sure about the variants of 110 though sorry, as I don’t tend to have everything available downloaded at once, as my poor old PC wouldn’t be able to cope! The above lsting was only a quick one off the top of my head, there are literally dozens and dozens more high quality, correctly flight-modelled aircraft out there for ‘Fighter Squadron’. We’ve even got such ‘fun’ oddities as the Gee Bee, a Harrier, F-14, and Snoopy on his kennel!!!
RE: They all look good !
Yes, we HAVE all had this conversation before! To see late Lancs with ‘Lincoln’ style tail fins, check out pictures of the Lancastrians, as many of those had the slightly larger rudder style, as did some (but not all!) Yorks. It all depended on what batch of aircraft it happened to be-the original, more cocmmon, ‘standard’ Lanc type were still being fitted to new aircraft in other batches at the same time!
I suppose it IS possible that PA474 had her own, original but still ‘Lincoln style’ fins replaced with those from Lincoln RF398 in the early days, as various other bits and bobs from RF certainly found their way into the Lanc! Though I’d have thought that would have been mentioned in the same book that describes ‘474 and ‘398 having their tails propped up on blocks ‘one lunchtime’ to swap the tail wheel assemblies over!
But whatever, the common assumption is that PA474 is somehow ‘wrong’ for having Lincoln style rudders to ‘keep her going’, when in fact, they are completely correct for this particular aircraft.
