“Did you also know that the tail fins are from a Lincoln…”

No, they are NOT!!! PA474, like many but not all of the last batches of Lancasters, was BUILT WITH THOSE TAIL FINS ORIGINALLY!!! You can see them on her in photos of her earliest days out in Africa with 82 Sqdn, and you can also see them on many pictures of other Lancs from those same last batches. Check your references before perpetuating incorrect assumptions!!!

    Merry Crimbo!

Thanks for the hard work there Ant. You know, I’d never managed to see any of ‘The World At War’ before, until I saw the one this morning which covered the Blitz/Battle Of Britain period; and on that strength alone, I shall be forking out the eighty quid or so after Crimbo to buy all 32 hours of it on DVD!

Actually, I found the sight of four little heads all looking in different directions form the mid upper quite funny during a taxi ride shown on the new ‘Just Jane’ video!

The excellent PA474 history book ‘A Lancaster At Peace’ by Ray Leach does indeed mention that turret fairing measurements were taken from the ‘Imperial War Museum’s Lancaster’, which is why for years I’ve wondered where the rest of it went-that was only in the seventies, so presumably there’s a Lancaster fuselage around somewhere that no none seems to know about!!! Come on, surely SOMEONE must know what happened to the rest of ‘Old Fred’?!

But then again, during her last major overhaul, when she was repainted into her current scheme, PA474 gained a new turret fairing, as apparently the ‘wrong drawings’ had been used for the original one-so who knows?!

I don’t know about ‘best looking’, but it’s certainly a nice photo of a great looking Lanc! NX611 has a lovely air of ‘wartime’ about her appearance, and if they could only sort out her mid-upper turret then she’d be damn near perfect in that respect.

PA474 has improved greatly over recent years, the move to satin paint having helped things tremendously, and her current ‘Micky The Moocher’ is a nice scheme, too. Still looks like a showpiece rather than a wartime machine, though!

Duxford’s Lanc looks completely bland and uninteresting to me-however nice a restoration job it is, it still remains singularly characterless, even for a beloved Lanc!

Hendon’s ‘Sugar’ should come off display for a while and have a few months work done on her, rather than a patch here and a patch there as they’re currently doing-she’s now got mis-matched areas of black paint on her, and last time I saw her there was a bare patch of skin on a bomb door, so I assume that will be another non-matching area of paint by now. If she’s suffering from patches of corrosion, all the more reason to strip her down again and give her a good going over-a proper, all over treatment before a full repaint-she’s been on display for nearly 30 years now after all! Most consider her to be a ‘star’ attraction at Hendon, and she should be treated as such.

The IWM London nose section is fun; nicely original looking, inside and out, though I have no idea how much of that is wartime or not!? We never did find out what happened to the rest of that one, did we?

And lastly, as it’s a close relation, I’ll say that Cosford’s Lincoln is looking pretty tasty these days, too!

I still prefer ‘Fighter Squadron’!!! Just been happily changing the skin on my Lancaster to that of Hendon’s ‘S-Sugar’-nice to get the old girl off her perch and up into the air!

It’s what you add to an older forum topic to ‘bump’ it back up to the top, and thus, into people’s view!

    RE: SHACKLETONS

No offence meant to anybody, but I think the IWM are too happy being a UK American Air Museum, I don’t really think of Duxford as being a good place to see historic UK types. All the ones they do have are crammed mostly into the one hangar there. Why didn’t they give the huge new building over to UK types, not US?
