RE: A medley of todays visit to Hendon
God, I love that place! Such an atmosphere…
RE: ‘Night Flight’-The Verdict
Okay so I’m a ‘Lanc’ man myself, but I have to say I was pretty disappointed when I first saw the YAM ‘Halifax’-it just doesn’t look at all right somehow, and I honestly think a film mock-up would have the same sit and ‘feel’ to it if they made one. An acheivement, yes, a Halifax, NO. Sorry.
Re. ‘Night Flight’-well summed up, Rabie!
RE: Message for Ashley.!
..oh yeah!!!:D
RE: ‘Night Flight’-The Verdict
Quite true of course, but they managed to make ‘Memphis Belle’ with what, 5 B-17s? And now they’ve achieved similar effects-on the ground side at least-in ‘Night Flight’, with what I assume were multiple NX611’s taxiing out, etc etc. Such a shame we couldn’t have just had a straight 1940’s bomber crew story.
RE: Time for a Lanc!
Nice photo! I’m glad the ‘City Of Lincoln’ crest got toned down a bit in later years though. It’s a shame that with modern paint techniques, codes and markings on ‘474 can’t be changed a little more often, without having to wait for the major overhauls and repaints of the entire aircraft. There were an awful lot of squadrons, but ‘474 will be due for her third main spar before she gets through them all! One I’d love to see, though I doubt they’d do it, is for her to be painted up as ‘Sugar’ from Hendon-that would look brilliant in the skies. And is she ever going to get her H2S?
Anyone else have a particular Lanc they’d like to see ‘474 painted up as?
RE: Message for Ashley.!
True, costs and safety have to be major issues, but when they used to run the Me 410 and FW 190 at St Athan…phhwwoorrgghhh!
RE: ‘Night Flight’-The Verdict
I agree entirely that anything that keeps Bomber Command in the public eye is to be congratulated, and I have no problems with the depiction of even this fictional crew-there were thousands upon thousands of young men on the bombers, with as many different personalities and feelings to match. I just thought that the main thrust of the story, that is that the pilot was the real father of his gunner’s child etc, was very drawn out and in the end, not sufficient to fill the time it was given.
I did very much enjoy the sequence with Edward Woodward in the pub, his pride at saying he served in Bomber Command-we need more stuff like that.
I’m sure East Kirkby did very well out of the drama-and good for them-I just don’t understand why there was no on-screen credit given? Surely, a casual viewer might have been interested enough to make a visit, once they realised that the aircraft and setting they saw was for real?
I’m not one who thinks everything should be all tally-ho and glorified-I certainly had no problem with ‘Piece Of Cake’ for example-but I think there has been yet another chance lost to have made a really decent Bomber Command film.
RE: ‘Night Flight’-The Verdict
I agree that a straight bomber crew story would have been better-you could still have set it within a modern day frame, perhaps a couple of crew members meeting for the first time since the war, stirring memories etc etc.
There are more than enough stories out there for real, without coming up with tosh like we saw last night. Anyone who has the book ‘Lancaster At War 2’, how about the ‘Jamie’ story from that? You can’t make things like that up, and you don’t need to.
It’s funny to me that years ago David Puttnam decided against making an RAF bomber film because there weren’t enough aircraft to do it with, but with just one aircraft and some clever modern effects they pulled off some sequences that were very ‘Memphis Belle’ like, at least on the ground anyway. What a shame NX611 wasn’t running a few more years ago!
RE: Message for Ashley.!
Aircraft sitting dormant in a museum are never going to be quite ‘right’-likewise, it’s possible for an aircraft to be TOO well restored, and to look TOO new!
Presumably our old friend cost will be cited as the reason KB889 is only static, and I suppose Duxford has enough to pull in the punters without needing to restore a Lanc to ground-running status?
A few years ago when they had a big shift around at Hendon, they had to remove one of S-Sugar’s wings to allow things in and out of the door behind her, and I saw the port outer engine on a stand, it looked absolutely ancient and was covered in that red wax stuff, but at least it was there!
RE: ‘Night Flight’-The Verdict
…one other thing, unless I blinked and missed it, where the hell was the thanks to the East Kirkby people in the credits?
RE: My favourite Mosquito
Well, whatever it is, it’s a fine looking aircraft. Imagine, two Merlins strapped to some wood!!!
RE: ‘Night Flight’ on next weekend!!!
Don’t forget tonight everyone!
RE: AD Grounds all B-17’s
Interesting-has there ever been any other warbird type grounded as a whole like this before?
RE: ‘Night Flight’ on next weekend!!!
For those in the UK that don’t normally take it, ‘Radio Times’ listing magazine has a couple of pages about ‘Night Flight’, with a couple of shots with NX611 in, although she’s not mentioned at all. Perhaps strangely for a BBC magazine, the drama, which is picked out as a ‘Choice’ for that day, is rated as ‘never quite taking off’ on the very page that is supposed to be suggesting you watch it! Oh dear!
I’ve not seen a TV ad for it yet-I bet the Lanc is the only good thing about it though!
RE: Restoration Update
Nice pictures-it would be nice to get it up to engine running-spec!
