Buyer’s question sent, politely pointing out that either they’ve been seriously mis-informed, or they’re trying it on, and that either way, they’re making a laughing stock of themselves.

    Honestly!

Yeah I found those pics a while back while Googling, and was amazed at the quality of them, especially when you start to zoom in. Shame there’s not more there for other sections in the bomber really.

Those are authentic wartime water bottles at the back of the nav’s table, of course?! 😉

Well, back in the day when I went to a lot of shows on a regular basis, I certainly got quite good at spotting who was flying her before the commentator would say! You could just tell the differences in style, even in a big old girl like the Lanc. Mike Chatterton was my favourite, he flew her very nicely indeed IMO.

OC BBMF after Colin Patterson was Andy Tomalin, who was a lovely chap when I met him once at one of the last St Athan airshows- the Lanc turned up last thing and put in there, and he came wandering straight over to the scattering of crowd that was left with some brochures. However, on a few different tapes I’ve got, he was clearly very nervous when on camera, so perhaps not quite the full-on PR skills needed when you’re OC BBMF?!

Looking again at the video of it, it looks more like it just got away from the pilot (Colin Patterson I think?) to be honest; it looks like she was flared out a smidge soon on a hot day, subsequently bumped about between her three points a bit, and just got away from him.

There’s footage of a smiliar, later incident that happened as she was landing at home on the old Discovery Channel BBMF docu; Rick Groombridge was at the controls, and it was filmed this time from the mid-upper turret. Again, all seems normal until she just starts bumping about and then skids heavily.

Maybe Fluffy can elaborate on these incidents for us?

1992 – I’ve put this one in as it shows poor old PA474 having a bad moment at Mildenhall….

I’ve still got footage of this incident on an old FlyPast airshows video- if people think the stills are bad, you should see it in motion and hear the engines revving to correct her!

How about pix of former pilots?

b*****s are always zooming about at 250kts though! 😀

I’ve always enjoyed the BBMF brochure, and putting faces to them all each year etc, and seeing them in documentaries etc, too.

Again, thank you for some great images, and as people have been saying, I agree that PZ should always have been ‘The Last Of The Many’; poor choice to ditch that, I feel. This year would be a great excuse to paint it back on her, y’know. 😉

Gosh, that made for sad reading. Had no idea the BBMF helped out afterwards- good on them. 🙁

I know that the Panton brothers asked BAe if they could re-spar their Lanc, but they were told no.

That’s very interesting- if true, then surely NX611’s chances of ever flying have in fact been nixed some time ago?

What with these and all the lovely Lanc overhaul stuff we’ve seen of late, it makes me feel quite privelleged! 🙂
