Excellent pictures, thank you! Love the one looking across the Lanc’s No.3 motor. What’s going on that necessitates the removal of the mid-upper deflection cam? Wasn’t that built new just a few years back, as the previous one was ‘wrong’ somehow?
‘Sqaudron Leader Johnston and his BRISTOLS…’
You’d think the poor chap would have strapped them down or had them removed or summat…
That’s interesting look about the Spit- listed as being from the ‘Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight’- in 1968? Further proof (there is more) that the BBMF was at least party known as the BBMF, before it officially became the BBMF in 1973!
Well, I’m still stamping my feet waiting for Steve Connor to release ‘Flight Of The Blenheim’ on DVD, like he said he was going to!
Remember that guy left waiting in the taxi cab in ‘Airplane’, and right at the end of the movie, he’s still there? That’s me, that is!!!
Mmmm, lovely pictures, thank you!
Mononthefence, the 60th D-Day poppy has already been added to the Lanc- JT Rachel Warnes is shown painting it on in the Winter 2004 Linc Lanc Association journal.
Still the nicest coat of paint the Lanc has ever worn!
Well said, that Hally-man!
Yup, Ray Leach was the Lanc’s Nav for some time I think in her early display days, and was also a Vulcan Display Flight Nav at some point, too?
The above mentioned book is very well worth getting, by the way; there’s an absolute wealth of info about PA474’s early days in it.
The only airshow crashes I’ve seen were as a little kid at Culdrose in the early 80’s- a little Beaver I think it was just flipped right over into the ground- and then I saw the Mig29 collision at Fairford RIAT.
The worst thing about that one was not the prospect of the pilots being killed- their instantaneous safe ejection was obvious for all to see- but rather, it was seeing the gut-reaction of the Blenheim crew on the ground beneath them, running towards their newly-finished Blenheim as if to throw their arms over it…now THAT I won’t forget.
*Loses dinner at thought of kid with helmet*
As underwater wreck exploration is another love of mine after WW2 aircraft, I’ll also step in here to say that ‘James Cameron’s Expedition Bismarck’ is a superb documentary programme, very moving and revealing, and is not to be confused with the more usual ‘documentary’ fare that gets churned out on TV these days. Given the extreme quality of the wreck exploration done, I can forgive the odd little bit of shoddy archive research!
That makes a bit more sense then, cheers Paul!
Can’t argue with that then, unless they’re simply not allowed to say…until they are, sort of a thing.
So, were our online colleagues from the BBMF simply winding us up, then? I have to say, if they were, it wasn’t very funny!
Just what IS going on with this story, anyway?
There’s a Halifax in the Bomber Hall?
(Goes off to fetch big torch to have a look)
Great news, and excellent pictures too, Gentlemen. That’s the kinda thing this forum is about- virtually ‘as it happens’ news!
Wow, what a Christmas present for all concerned that will be!
