What people are missing is the fact this has gone to Brunty is a disaster,

We have an excellent record in preservation though, don’t we. At least this time RAFM can wash their hands of it. If I was them I’d be trying to secure a fuselage – probably a C1K (108 is still intact IIRC) or ‘241, as the K3s would be a nightmare to access. Probably won’t happen though. It’d be nice if NAM or another similar collection could secure a fuselage section too.

Regarding the BA VC-10 landing at Cosford. Did the civil VC-10’s retain all four reversers? The RAF deleted the inboard pair on their aircraft.

I thought the same when ‘808 was doing it circuits on the short runway at Cranwell in preparation for the Cosford landing. From the photos I can find whilst it was still intact, the BA VC10 had only the outer pair too.

Cool ohh its arrived, might volunteer to help if they would have me, did the courses many moons ago.

Would have preferred to see a C1 remain as a runner though.

I was under the impression it was going to be ‘108 kept as a runner.

K4 probably makes the most sense, C1K could have been more interesting to let people in to. K3 – too much of a smelly faff!

So a commercial venture with a third party making a profit at the end of it?

But here we had a historically fairly insignificant aircraft, with presumably limited visual and aural impact (I admittedly never saw it fly myself) and (in my opinion) severe and known… and instrumentation (airspeed indicator) issues.

From the report, did it mention the ASI, other than a retrofit to some aircraft in the recommendations? Altimeter, yes

‘Altimeter u/s….altimeter is of small scale type
which is of little practical use to the pilot at low levels.’

I’m just questioning whether it is always worthwhile, but am admittedly not much of a risk-taker myself.

He was an exceptionally talented aviator, with what can really only be described as an exceptional level of experience (15,000hrs for an ex-RAF FJ pilot was good going). He was experienced enough to make his own decision, which in this case was endorsed by his “superior” at the collection.

Hopefully some processes will be put in place to make the decision making process, and the data available on which to make the decision, better.

What a sad loss of life.

The main point, agreed. A loss to everybody.

A few weeks ago I received some blurb from an advertising company, which related to the new set-up and several items that it contained worried me.

Have the MoD/RAF PR and marketing gurus got their hands on it?

    Very impressive!

    Magnificent sky with the Hurricanes.

Quite a talent, young Mr Hope!

    Indeed. Spectacular cloud structure.

They are really good, actually really really good.I wonder if he would be interested in posting on here http://ehangar.com/

My only caution is that they can be very, sometimes overly, critical. I know of a young artist who’s work was picked apart and I haven’t seen him since. I’d let him develop a little more of a portfolio (or put more of it on the web first).:)

Salute to one of the finest pilots in the history of aviation.

If I could have a tenth of his skills I would be a proud man.

    Moggy

I struggle to put a glide landing (albeit in a powered aeroplane) exactly where I want it in broad daylight on an airfield. To do in around midnight, in a boggy field next to a canal in France was nothing short of utterly superb but also as a target of such importance too, there can be very few comparable feats.

To lead them in and put where he did could almost not have been planned for in advance of the operation.

RIP to a very fine aviator.

Next they will send all the Typhoons & Tonkas.

They do, except for ARCo, read BAE SYSTEMS.:)

In the case of the bbmf they dont have the manpower to do a full overhaul so its best to contract out to arco where all the services are available to do the work in house.

In short, overall, it costs less*.

(*or maybe , more importantly, appears to cost less)

    🙂

Wouldnt it make more sense for there to be an enthusiast day where an airliner like an ATR is chartered so more than a handful of people could see the Vulcan in the air at close quarters .

    I suggest two potential problems:

    1) a crew in said regional airliner who “the Vulcan” would be happy to conduct a formation with (probably not too difficult).

    2) an airline willing to let one of their fleet fly in formation with an ex-military jet (probably more significant!)!
