So he donated them and they have now been sold on by the charitable trust. Doesn’t say an awful lot about their ethics.

    Regards

For a good cause, with the intention of saving a building of huge historical significance for the nation. Eloquently described here by Lord Ashcroft:

With the number of bomber squadrons, noteworthy aircraft and notable crews (I use the term slightly cautiously, IMHO any Bomber Command crew is as notable as the next), the relative similarity of most of the paint schemes (minor differences in the black/brown/green pattern), it is a shame they can’t change the identity of the aircraft on a yearly or bi-annual basis.

What I’d like to see: A Pathfinder scheme from a notable (again cautiously used!) Sqn, 582 Sqn. Bob Palmer VC’s final crew and Ted Swales VC (and his crew) were both of 582 Sqn.

It would be a slightly different Sqn code to see too. I don’t think PA474 has ever commemorated a Sqn with a numerical Sqn code (582 was “60” IIRC).

PB371, 60-V would get my vote, Flt Lt Owen Milne’s aircraft, which Palmer was flying on the day they were lost.

I thought I read somewhere else that the formation was originally going to be the three remaining C.1Ks (but one going tech) to mark their retirement – is that wrong then?

That is a great picture, as is Keiths.

I think that was the original rumour. It seems the actual plan was, whilst ‘241 was on holiday back up in the UK, to do a final formation with all three remaining models of the ’10. “Bob”, the C1K leading, with a K3 and the K4 behind.

As it happened, ‘108 became ‘241’s “body double” for the day!

And to keep the record straight, the VC10 hasn’t been used in a passenger transport role since 2010.

In a very “loose” sense! I think it depends on the definition of passengers!;):D

Or another “operational requirement’ came up,,,,

Or, looking out of the window, it might have been the weather…

BBMF Dak ZA947 just went home to Conningsby – bit of a late trip isn’t it? Not used to BBMF a/c out this late…

Judging by the noise over about 50 minutes ago, it was a flypast over a function at Cranwell.;)

I was thinking more along the lines of the preseved RAF Bicester project.

Might be ok for the baby aeroplanes, but with a max runway length of about 3,300ft (in the direction requiring either departure or final approach over the town), it’s a bit tight!:D

If they operated off a nice grass airfield it would be a 26mph head wind = no problems. Tarmac is overrated, unless is been raining for more than a day or so. 😉

Or deploy to Cranwell (2 runways – although the second maybe a bit short for the Lanc/Dakota!) on the Friday if the wind’s looking dodgy for the weekend.;)

It’s a bit windy up here in Lincolnshire today (bad direction too!), perfectly understandable.:)

As he was before my time, I’d like to see Neil Williams. Probably in anything. AR501, Zlin, MH434, Mosquito, Boxkite, SE5. I wouldn’t be fussed. Even a jet.

    Possibly THE pilots’ pilot.:)

Unlikely considering the initial news reports mentioned 30-45 minutes of holding before the belly landing was attempted, and that the airport emergency services had been alerted for an emergency landing.

How many C1Ks remain airworthy? And what are their retirement dates? I’d like to see one flying before it’s too late!!!

    4: XR808 & XV104/106/108

Not sure on dates. I suspect the K3s/K4 and 808 will be last, the other C1Ks going before then.

    why?

We’ll, maybe similar operationally, although IIRC it was the K3s involved in Granby was it not?

As for “engineering” interest, the K4 has a very nice conference room/exhibition hall/party room after of the pax bulkhead, but surely the K3’s tank bay would be of greater interest?:)
