I guess any collapse would have enormous ramifications for the Scottish travel trade and airport revenues, particularly Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

Might give the MoD a headache too, considering the charters out of Brize to the Falklands and Middle East!

To be honest, ACM Burridge, whilst CAS, was of the opinion that long term the RAF would be no more than 6 MOB (one assumes Brize, Waddo, Lossie, Coningsby, Leuchars/Marham and A N Other helicopter base), and that was at least 4 years ago.

I’d either like to see Len Deighton’s “Bomber”, or the story of the daylight raid on the marshalling yards of Cologne, on the 23rd December 1944, as told in Sean Feast’s “Heroic Endeavour”.

F.3 could be a valuable tactical tanker, similar to but faster then USN KA-6E (Intruder)

Much easier to scramble a VC10:D. Seeing as Tonka’s often take 2-3 tons a plug it’d be pretty much on minimums by the time it got on station – or less if it had got there as quick as them. Limited use with a well constructed and utilised air defence system (like the one existing from the Arctic Circle down to the North Sea).

Interesting. Any particular cons of the game?

I just found it all a bit fiddly, and seeing anything over 1000 (of any unit) on the air speed loses a bit of cred!

On the plus side, the rendition of Manston looked quite nice – although I don’t think the concrete runway existed in 1940.:)

I’d suggest that if you can, get a demo version. I’d probably be a bit disappointed if I’d bought it purely on the experiences of the PC franchise. The free demo for PS3 is available through the PS3 online store (about a 1GB download), and I’m sure others will be available through the magazines etc.

Had a go at the demo on the PS3 last week. A valiant effort, but I doubt I’ll part with the cash (maybe later when it’s come down in price by a fair margin), just not quite right for me.

Shame they never got round to the BoB version of the PC sim.

Judging by a recent thread regarding Hendon and the running of the RAF Museum, and the decision to make them free, introducing parking charges at either site may not be a bad thing, providing the money goes to the right place.

    If it doesn’t…

Whats “irrelevant”? That the crew walked away unhurt, or that we express relief about it? (Well, the later is rather irrelivant after all, I give you that).

Original post amended to make focus of quote clearer.:)

Yet they are prosecuting a war in Afghanistan using gazillions of gallons of fuel – and chartering inefficient, gas guzzling, environmentally undfriendly old airliners that pollute the skies far more than I ever will with my one holiday trip a year to Russia…..:eek::eek:

You’re talking about the VC10, right?

Only messing; as for the DC-8 old aeroplanes = cheap charter I suspect. I’m sure a nice new Airbus or Boeing freighter operated by a major freight airline would cost most of the defence budget. 😉

I wonder whats worse, dying in the crash or ejecting over Taleban lines…

Rather irrelevant in this case, as is the talk of terrain etc, as the early press releases stated that the “crash” occurred within the airfield boundary on take off:

Capt. Ruben Hoorncelv, a spokesman for the NATO-led force, says a fighter jet crashed inside Kandahar Air Field during takeoff at 7:20 a.m. Afghanistan time Monday.

and the problem most likely happened quite high up.

Quite the opposite, in fact from what’s been posted elsewhere, it couldn’t have been lower.

They’d be little short of target drones……..

A computer doesn’t need to refresh it’s skills. Leave the human to do what humans do best (strategy and tactics), and let the computer do the mundane stuff.

Mmm, like to see people taking responsibility for letting them do that over somewhere like Scotland on what is quite a densely populated island…

F3 UCAVs would stand alert 24/7/365 and never complain about weekend and holiday duty.

    Oh goody. More time off…

but mission operations would be managed from a cozy central location complete with coffee and donuts (or tea and…well, whatever those things are you Brits snack upon).

    …Ah…;)

Why was an F-3 interceptor flying a low level training mission?

Low level flying is a fairly perishable skill, so it wouldn’t be uncommon even for a fleet who’s primary job is generally anything but low level to conduct such training.

Here is a picture of a Harrier GR9 in Afganistan. It seems to have a lot of pods/weapons on it. Anyone got any ideas of what we are looking at here. It looks to me as if there is a pod stuck onto the Gun pods in the centre. (or rather i should say Empty Gun Pods because of another screw up at the MOD). I wonder how many times the troops and harrier crews wished they could fire that cannon on deployment i imagine quite a lot. even if they used it 10 times that would still be worth it. I never understood why they didn’t just use the old guns (30mm ADEN i think) that were there originally?

Depends on the job they were doing. A lot of overwatch type stuff, acting as an airborne set of eyes perhaps for the chaps on the ground, and dropping the occasional bomb on an enemy position wouldn’t require the cannon and its servicing and support.

How did they get the harriers back from Afganistan? I know HMS Illustrious was out that way recently.

VC10 I believe, as they arrived at Cottesmore with one of them.:)
