On a historical note (well, this is a historical forum after all!), it is worth noting that after almost 20 years of RAF and VC10 AAR operations over Iraq, XV102 was the aircraft that flew the final sortie on 31st May 2009.
IIRC it was planned for the back end of 2013 (I think the original plan was for the TriStar to go first, mid 2013, then the ’10), although I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it came forward, particularly after the extra usage of the fleet during ops over Libya.
With the introduction of the new Hawk into RAF service it would make good financial sense to evaluate the Arrows fleet against the Fleet in storage with a view to swapping out for the best available.
I think you’re about right. With the draw down of the Hawk T1 fleet, it’ll be prudent to ensure the right airframes in terms of life and fatigue are available to allow the Reds to continue as long as possible in their current form, as I suspect “the plan” will have them operating the T1 long after it’s left Valley and 100Sqn service.
There also a very interesting video of the legendary Mr Hanna buzzing alan de cadanet.
That may be considered a different case as the run where the “buzz” took place began with the Spitfire firmly attached to the ground (ie, it was taking off!). Maybe slight abuse of the 500ft rule though (person, vessel, vehicle, structure etc)…:)

Sadly looking at their website, after a little chest poking and provocation, the “admin” has made a rather distasteful comments regarding the sad loss at Bournemouth last weekend.
If they are insisting on setting up a “camp” at Waddington, isn’t it in everyone’s best interests that is certainly isn’t anywhere in the vicinity of the WAVE? I according to the peace campers website, the MoD have already announced the viewing enclosure is closed next Saturday, although I haven’t seen this confirmed elsewhere, and could just be a ruse by the “campers” to avoid any counter use of the WAVE!
Hi, Just come across this photo which my Brother in law gave me on my visit there on 30th March 1967. The Comet 2 shown in centre of photo is the last of Lynhams Comet 2’s. It made it’s final flight on the day of my visit 30th March 1967.
Interesting photo. It appears to have been take on the far western set of “spectacles” down the road at RAF Fairford looking NE: Aerial photo – post mid 2000s reprofiling which removed the tarmac/concrete mix.
Not if they were based at Fairford in 1967 it won’t 😉
46 then!:D
With a little knowledge from a bit of aerial sight-seeing over the islands in question…
1) is there any land to build and operate an airfield, with all the associated IFR approaches etc (with weather in mind), without a civil engineering project to build a new, flatter island!
2) South Georgia is quite a long way from the Falklands (the mainland is far closer IIRC). With current equipment it’d be fairly impractical, and potentially very dangerous to mount any kind of strike from such an isolated destination. Once you’ve magically created an airfield.:)
Off the top of my head Robert Taylor, Gerald Coulson and Philip West have produced limited edition prints of Swordfish, although as mentioned above, ehangar has a useful search tool (I can’t post a direct link, but their search tool found 11, not including Philip West’s “Operation Ceberus”, which is my favourite, I think, and his other Swordfish paintings):

ebay’s always a good place to look for bargains. I’ve quite a substantial collection of Coulson prints, quite a few (well, 3 or 4) of them found at prices verging on theft on ebay!:D
Here’s a good link to Philip West’s Sworsfish:

🙂 At the moment the game is highly buggy and very demanding on PC specs
Shame that, as the original IL2 series from Oleg was the opposite, and ran very well on what one wouldn’t expect it to. In fact, I remember it running quite nicely on a very average laptop.:)
Pah! Get some op time in shiney fleet!
Ok, deployed ops, (quite a way) outside of the UK if we’re getting pedantic.;)
I thought the VC-10 to Dux was off due to them already having the BOAC example?
I suppose that’s a question for IWM to answer as to whether they consider the C1K/K3/4 historically important enough in a military context (they have after all be continuously on ops for over 20 years).
Wasn’t a 10 mooted for Duxford as well, last one will be going Brunty as a runner I believe, and one as said to Cosford, have the serail somewhere, but was the first into service i think…………….
I think the original plan was XR808 (Bob). Whether any consequences of the Libya issue, and potential extension of other airframes in the fleet will change this is another matter.
As for Duxford, is there the capacity and money for the upkeep of another very large airframe (although one that would easily fit under the IWM banner)?
As an aside, when the VC10 retires in 2013, the fleet would have been based continually at Brize Norton for 47 years. Is this a record for a single front line type in one location?
Amazing that the jets is nearly intact :
Until they blow the wings off using C4!:D Subtle!
