As the three FSMs (P.6, Defiant, Balliol) have wooden frames, they cannot be displayed outside, because they would deteriorate very quickly. This has always been the problem in relocating them. Most Museums would have to put a real aircraft outside into the weather in order to make way for one of them.

Can I add what a fantastic place it is. I was there last week, being guided round by John Wright, and he and all the guys down there, about 20 of them last Friday, are really friendly, and clearly highly skilled. I think the Coventry branch work there on Wednesdays. The workshop is huge and contains engines from all the branches of RR as well as many foreigners. (As far as I am concerned the star exhibit is the Sunbeam Cossack which is on loan from Duxford – Why?)

The Centre is open to visitors on Friday afternoons, just make an appointment and turn up at the gate. And it it no longer sited in a RR factory, which has been demolished around it.

The Overstrand nose will have a public outing at the Easter Wings & Wheels at Halfpenny Green (31st March/1st April) if anyone wishes to see it. It might be its last ever public outing unless those of us who want to stop it going into store at Cosford have our way.

The three FSM’s (P.6/Defiant/Balliol) are going to Cosford before the end of the month, though they are still being dismantled. They are apparently going in hangar 2, though this is not certain, and there is some hope that they will be in the static for the Airshow, though as the Museum and the Airshow do not always see eye to eye, this is also not certain.

The Roc did have wing guns – but then it was called the Skua.

Well I don’t have a spinner or a tailwheel either, Alan. I do have a BP picture of a Balliol completely wrapped up in purpose made covers, so it occurs to me that if I collected a complete set of covers and put them on a framework, I could just claim there was a Balliol underneath.

Building the Blackburn Roc is probably not something to boast about. The BP workers probably kept quite quiet about it.

Alan, If you are going to be at the Wings & Wheels aerojumble at Halfpenny Green at Easter being your selection of covers along, I’m sure some will fit some of our stuff. I was mortified that you did not have Balliol covers by the way! I have covers for two wheels, and one prop blade, though I only have one actual wheel and no prop blades !

Only last year at Halfpenny Green, while clearing the overflow car-park in preparation for the Easter Wings & Wheels, in the long grass alongside, we stumbled upon a World War Two spade grip ! We were too busy to give more than a cursory search for any more, so if you come to this year’s event on 31st March/1st April who knows……….

Enginefest at the Easter Rotors Wings & Wheels, to give it its full title, at Halfpenny Green will feature the unusual sight of an electric Alvis Leonides running. Alongside John Hoole’s lovely trailer mounted engine will be a Leonides with only one Pot fitted, operating from the power of a 12v battery, showing what is going on inside, while Hooligan makes all the noise alongside.

The Boulton Paul project Number P.226 refers to the electric link for the Mark 12 Hunter (One off, experimental fly by wire) There is only one ‘P’ number for this project, so it’s just possible it is part of that system

The Boulton Paul Association have a full scale model of a Type E tail turret based on a real cupola. This is actually Halifax of course, not Lancaster, but might be more available and handy than a real turret.

Anyone who has looked at the JP.5 pics on the above link, will find at the bottom an offer for sale of JP.4 XR664. In actual fact only a half share in the JP.4 is on offer, as the owner of the other half is not selling. If you pm me I will let you have the details.

The helicopters are with Air & Ground Aviation at Hixon, and are currently on the runway, in front of the four Hercules. Air & Ground also still have an air/ sea rescue Wessex and the Spitfire FSM gate guard, both of which they sometimes put on evil.bay. Sometimes they also sell stuff through their VWINME site.
