    Hi Dave

What a coincidence this one was restored to flying condition around the same time at Tarrant Rushton Dorset early 1980’s.

Maybe we should start a buried aircraft/engine rumour thread?

It might be amusing to cross reference various tales and sources.

Whilst almost 99.9% are surely the aviation equivalent of an urban myth, something interesting may yet come out of it. Here we go. See the new thread…..

Good idea Andy. Years ago when I was a member of an Aviation Archeology group. We even had the plans to where everything was buried from the MOD with permission to dig within 6 months. The only thing that left this Airfield were the staff. All the Hardware was buried It was a USAF Base.

And another one. Lancaster gun turrets, engines, etc buried at an Airfield, I was told this by a reliable source from an employee that helped bury this stuff.

When you think about it at the end of the war it was indeed worthless junk with so many tons of it. The scrap merchants weren’t interested apart from when they broke up a load of Lancs at Tarrant Rushton, used after the war by Flight Refueling. Of which its understood that the Battle of Britain Lanc came from TR. They realized this was the last one in flying condition

Think about it there was a lot of it at the time worthless junk. So it had to go somewhere. Manly in the ground so its not really a myth.:)

If you think it was called butcher bird because of its abilities, you are wrong. Focke-Wulf gave all (or at least most) of their planes nicknames, all of them birds. For example Fw 44 Stieglitz – goldfinch, Fw 56 Stösser – sparrow hawk, Fw 58 Weihe – harrier, Fw 187 Falke – falcon [hawk], Fw 189 Uhu – eagle owl, Fw 200 Kondor – condor, several others, and last but not least Fw 190 Würger – shrike or butcher bird.

    Michael

No not wrong. Just as it was known as the Butcher Bird.

Well I think its an absolutely fantastic job Bruce. Seeing the results of this aircraft flying after all that dedication and hard restoration work is just Brilliant.

Seeing the video of this FW190 flying makes me think of the Tip and run raids on Torquay, what it must have been like then. I see now why it was nicknamed the butcher bird.

Just found this video of the FW190 Flying with BMW 801. And a 109 with a DB601.

Fantastic job done by the restoration guys. Just goes to show from a wreck in a forest to this.

Came across this interesting video and wondered what became of the aircraft?

Truly amazing. I have heard it was restored to flying condition, great news. The description that accompanies the video on how the aircraft got there, is as interesting as the aircraft itself.

    Excellent job. Thanks for sharing.
Love the Vulcan at Swinderby.I was there around that time.

And the RAF Valley hawk. Open day 1969. I was driving a mini van along the perry track on crowd control that’s making sure no one wonders onto the airfield. I looked in my rear view mirror and a red arrow was coming up behind me, I waved him past he was at the same height. WOW! If only I had a camera.

Anyone remember “The Watch Tower” On BBC2 Must be about 30 years ago now. An excellent account of Ghostly goings on at RAF East Kirkby. Narrated By the Late Squadron Leader Jack Currie.

WOW! T21 That takes me back a bit.

Bannerdown Gliding club RAF Colerne early 1970’s. Under tuition. 900ft off a winch launch and I stalled the Airoplane never forget doing that. Never did it again scared me to death. They saw the stall on the ground. And when I landed I was congratulated on my impressive aerobatic maneuvers.

Wouldn’t surprise me, someone in Whitehall trying to justifying their job. So they can charge anyone when they want to use it like music. You could always use Dambuster1 or DambustersA. Bit late now to make it copyright I would have thought.

Former RAF Tarrant Rushton Dorset. The final days. There is enough history to this Airfield to fill a hanger.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddDB7jIyCIY

The only things left are two hangers and a memorial.

    Hope you enjoy.
