This debate ran on PPrune for a good long time, including input from Vulcan Aircrew and ground crew.

I think the concensus was ‘Leave it as a ground taxier”

Numerous groundcrew pointed out the Vulcan was a bloody nightmare to keep servicable when it was in RAF service, never mind in an organisation that relies on public donations to keep going. Does anyone know the PH cost of keeping a Vulcan in the air? Would airshow appearances cover it, or indeed, could airshows afford to have the Vulcan present?

The aircraft was disassembled and put in boxes, then threatened with scrapping. Or sold on ebay of course.

Could you get a Halibag into the air for 2.7 million? Or a Hampden?

Could you rebuild A Whirlwind, or resurrect other extinct airframes?

Sorry, I was priveleged to see Vulcans in their operational environment many years ago, so maybe that’s why I’m not particularly fazed about whether she flies or not.

I’m with the group that thinks the money could be used for other aviation related endeavours.

    Hi Ian,

Good to see another 615VGS old boy around. 😀

I think the Spitties line abreast is actually Kenley , remember the dip? Also, those trees on the boundary look very familiar. I think we’re looking from the old contol tower end, down towards Whyteleafe Common , so Hayes Lane is on the left as we look at the photo, and the Officers mess is out of shot on the right.

The second photo I think , is the revetment farm on the Hayes lane side (Near the current crash gate and observatory. The Spitfire parked furthest from the camera , is in the “1940 strafing” spot. If you look closely at the photo, you can see the rising ground in the far distance, of the other side of the valley.

Isn’t the house just off Whyteleafe Hill?

Anyway, thanks for posting , real blast from the past there 🙂

It was a denial of service attack originating in Taiwan, so I am reliably informed by OC Pprune.

Site was supposed to be down till this morning, still no change.

In the interim, Military aviator bods are using arrse.co.uk , to get their fix of service banter 🙂

    Rest in Peace Ken…

Saw his last interview on BBC2 , full of dark humour, excellent.

    Rest in Peace Ken.

Would have been nice if the Canadians gave him a flypast…

    RE: Tom writes some more…

Snapper, just wanted to say, what a fantastic job you’ve done, in a remarkably short period of time. Might I suggest one thing?

If funds stretch to it, would it be possible to have a bench at the spot, so people could sit and reflect possibly? I know that part of the world, it’s beautiful in summer…

    Once again, bloody outstanding work

RE: Two in a fighter. Did it ever happen?

The one incident I remember from the Battle of France, was a Spitfire and a Magister. Pilot force landed, another pilot took the station hack and picked him up I believe

    RE: Computer specs…

For those of you with less horsepower, can i recommend European Air War from Microprose? Incredible detail, and in the budget bin now, at most software shops, but better than CFS II for my money. Just type Cord+EAW in google, to go to the best resource site on the net for support………

Point taken Christer…Not sure why a Spitfire in a museum in Chicago is upset, but I can see why ur miffed..:0) Mind you , I felt the same, when after a request to identify bits of aircraft outside DTMB in Berlin was answered, by my phoning me mate, the good Herr Dr Dr, it was met by a total lack of thanks…..Oh well, youth… rush rush rush, it’s the curse of the age you know 🙂 Anyway, got some new tecchie stuff for you to get your teeth into, will be posting it up on our board later

    RE: Cambridge Footlights Sketch?

It was actually the late Peter Cook, and Dr. Jonathan Miller……

The scene, a Bomber station in Blighty, Winter 1941….. and a young and eager pilot is approached by the station commander….

Cook We’re two down, and the ball’s in the enemy court. War is a psychological thing, Perkins, rather like a game of football. You know how in a game of football ten men often play better than eleven?

    Miller Yes, sir.

Cook Perkins, we are asking you to be that one man. I want you to lay down your life, Perkins. We need a futile gesture at this stage. It will raise the whole tone of the war. Get up in a crate, Perkins, pop over to Bremen, take a shufti, don’t come back, Goodbye, Perkins. God, I wish I was going too.

Miller Goodbye, sir–or is it–au revoir?

    Cook No, Perkins.

RE: Working on bringing them home.

    That’s exactly the spirit Moggy……. :0)

I do believe , that even a voice as small as 300 people can make a difference, even if we eached co-erced a friend into supporting us as well.

One of the horrible stories I heard, regarded the remains of an airman in Holland,. I can’t go into more detail, till I have the facts in front of me, but it was very very upsetting.

I believe we can all make a difference, and I believe we can all show that we punch above our weight!

    Best regards
