For anyone interested in this, there is (for once) an excellent thread on a-net about the disappearance, which links also to an older thread (pre-disappearance) giving harrowing accounts of Adam Air and the Indonesian aviation industry. A frightening and thought provoking read.

KLM’s 789’s?
I’ve flown business class a handful of times with KLM on their 74M’s. Can only compare it with Malaysian Business class and similar to you I found KLM’s product not quite as good in comparison.
That said, its a good product and its a product that varies according to aircraft.
Hmmm, the feedback gets better.. 🙂
Trip not happening now anyway (boo) for a few months at least.
Hmm, some interesting comments there.
I may be going to Shanghai soon and would normally route KLM via Amsterdam. Decided to check other skyteam options and noted that China Eastern operate an Air France flight from Paris. Given the timings are more convenient, and I’ve never been on an A340, I thought I may opt for this (price permitting).
Not overly encouraging feedback though…
Bad news for passengers.
As for the serial complainers; the only point I would add is that a good chunk of complainers vent their anger because of lack of support in the event of such ‘circumstances’ rather than the circumstances themselves. Combine this with stress levels, congestion, deadlines, missed meetings, late holidays etc, it can lead to a lot of tension.
Just hope the airline is doing all it can to support the stranded pax.
Despite what I’ve said above, the experience I’ve found of KLM is that you either love them or hate them with very little in between. Fortunately I love them, but a lot of my colleagues who travel more frequently than me, have had some horrible experiences:-
Bags go missing
Fokker feeder services breaking down/going tech/getting cancelled
The poor state of the 747s inside
etc..etc..
These may seem small things and “well these things happen”. But when you fly 3 or 4 times a week with an airline (which some of my colleagues do), these experiences become highlighted and a major frustration. A bag going missing and turning up two weeks later maybe fine ordinarily, but if you need the stuff for your meetings at your destination, or for your next trip if you’re inbound, it gets annoying…particularly as these things aren’t rare occurences.
In my experience of 50 KLM flights in 2 years, I’ve never lost a bag but have had 2 cancellations. Is that normal….who knows, but I still love ’em.
Interesting, though not surprising.
I expect the order to be a mix of 737NGs and 787s (couldn’t be anything else really) with the 738 and possibly 739 being the aircraft to replace existing 757-200’s in the U.K.
Disappointing that even the Thomson name will go, but again not exactly a surprise.
Business has little room for sentimentality…unfortunately.
Now that is a bonus; didn’t expect to get a PTV on a narrow bodied airbus!
I’m expecting to be on an A320 to be honest, can’t imagine pax numbers being so numerous to Azerbaijan, but you never know – am yet to travel on any A321 so it would be a first.
Back to PTVs, the website says all new aircraft will have PTVs, nothing about retro-fitting old, so I guess there could be a chance of getting the old drop down LCD format?
Interesting operation isn’t it, reading the website. Wonder how Bmed can make these destinations work when BA couldn’t?
Do you do a lot of business/leisure travel T5?
You’re lucky that you can sleep on planes. Most I can manage is a periodic doze, which is a nightmare when you have to be alert at the other end.
Who do you usually use to travel then?
Back to the combis, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them reduce in number. I believe one has already been converted to full pax recently. The poor old birds are looking worn and tired, even in the new colours they look wrecked on the inside.
The older models came in around 1989, so they’re one of the first 744s off the line, whilst some of the newer ones are 8-10 years old I think.
KLM come into their own with the 777 and A330. I’ve only had one KLT7 flight and haven’t yet been on their 330s, but the economy product is the best I’ve ever experienced. Add that to the typical homely KLM service, and you have an absolute winner.
Despite this, there is still something special about flying on a 747 – no matter its appearance.
Further routes being announced today are:-
Nice (Sun/Wed)
Menorca (Sat)
Ibiza (Fri/Mon)
Jersey (Sat)
Pula (Thu)
In addition to increased frequencies on already announced routes.
The second GSM aircraft “appears” confirmed…. 🙂
Do we know what the first aircraft will be?
733/4/6/7/8?
Tenerife will now run in the Summer using the spare Tuesday afternoon slot for the based aircraft (once a week).
Good news, but I still want to see aircraft number 2! 🙂
To be honest if Thomsonfly drop LBA they SHOULD drop MME.
And on what business knowledge do you base this latest remark on? Thank goodness, you’re not running our airlines Tommy (or anything else for that matter).
Have yet to see anything to prove the Thomsonfly story yet.
In fact, I have received information from DTV on the very subject which clearly says that the Thomsonfly aircraft will be back next year. At the moment, I’m inclined to believe the base is staying.
