Pagen- I am a very strong advocate of paying for good television. But I would be far happier paying less for more, along the lines of several of my earlier posts. And I totally agree about F1 – and had already mentioned soccer.

I am not that concerned about the website and of course the world service funding has only just bercome the responsibility of the BBC; up until the last budget it has come out of the Foreign Office budget.

As for the sale of Shepherd’s Bush – that would not be happening had the BBC not embarked on the ludicrously expensive and entirely unnecessary move to Manchester.

Pagen – I beg to differ on the ratings point and I think it too simplistic to separate the respective strengths, as you have. Commercial TV has and still does produce first class drama and documentaries.

Your last paragraph completely exemplifies what the BBC should be unafraid to do.

As Chox says – sheer nostalgia – and truly so, because I would love to be back there during those years.:)

I wouldn’t quarrel with anything on that list except Open all Hours and Bottom:D,. But that list is a pretty thin spread over 50 years. My point is a different one, as I posted much earlier. There is no denying that the BBC has produced a range of excellent programmes across a wide field. There is also no denying that it currently produces a great deal of rubbish and programmes of mediocre quality but of high popular appeal in order to attract ratings.

Public service broadcasting should not be concerned with ratings. It should only be concerned with the highest quality drama, documentary and current affairs. It should also forfeit the vast sums it pays for soccer and spend less on sports which are popular but far cheaper to broadcast.

It wastes far too much money on staff and on duplication of radio and TV resources and on crazy ventures like the move to Manchester – £800 millionat the last count, of our money!!:mad:

BBC1, BBC2, radio 3 and radio 4 and no TV until children’s TV at about 3.00 and close down at midnight.
