Al – great picture at Luqa – can you date it? I was on the island quite a lot in the late 60s/early 70s and recall Luqa as a busy airfield but never saw the tin triangle there.

As far as I am aware from speaking to my US friends, they don’t pay a licence fee like we do. But the amount of advertising they have on their channels is phenomenal. I sampled some US style TV when I spent some time over there a few years ago. They have an ad break before the programme starts, then the opening credits then an ad break then every 10 mins or so until just before the end credits were there is another ad break both just before and just after the credits roll. :confused:

That’s true but see above – public service TV and radio is paid out of federal taxes and some States, I think Wisconsin and Maryland and a few others have public service TV which is paid out of the State taxes. So there is no direct license fee paid but it is tax funded.

About three quarters of European countries and half in Asia and Africa pay a license of some description to watch TV. In North America public service radio and TV is paid for out of state or federal taxes.

I could add a few more to “innit”. What is happening to our speech?? Regional dialects are fine and good, but downgrading “received English” to an argot mixture of American/Australian/Essex sloppy speech is dreadful. I blame Tony Blair!:eek::(

Yes, that is the main point but also if bigger budget means better production value on the screen, yes, but if it means starry names, no!

No, we should have a public financed TV broadcaster – but as I have said many times in various threads the BBC should be dramatically reduced in size, providing 2 radio channels – 3 and 4 and 2 TV channels – without daytime programming. Ratings as a benchmark would be banished. And we would all pay about £50 p.a.
