    Exactly and the expectations as are far lower – no vast CGI budgets and the chance of skillfully interweaving real aircraft into technically accurate and appealing human stories. First Light set the bar, as far as I am concerned and the BBC should be emulating that programme.

    With no disrespect to an honourable soldier – he has dismissed 3 decades of complex and dangerous European history to a few simplistic words. Fortunately Churchill knew more about European history than Harry Patch.

    I think the place for these films is television not the big screen. And if the BBC end up directing more resources to high quality, relatively low budget films instead of to much of the garbage they broadcast, then they will be honouring their remit to us the license payers.

    With the UK and France as the only nations prepared to put their servicemen on the line, NATO is pretty irrelevant. A rapid exodus from the EU followed by a military covenant with the US and France and an economic covenant with the Commonwealth might be ideal for the UK.

    Harry Patch was talking about WW1 – if he had been referring to WW2 then his comments would have been very misguided.
