I have friends in the U.S.A. and other places, and have managed to have to explain some of OUR words, and the differences they mean, ie Curtains,= Drapes.Nappies = Diapers etc.
Anyone from anywhere, any Country tell me some of the words they use, which have the same meaning, but named differently.

    Lincoln. 7

Let alone words in our own country!;)

I did suffer the classic misunderstanding many years ago in the US, when I was introduced to “Bill” who nodded to his colleague who said, “Hi I’m Randy.”

    [QUOTE=Lincoln 7;1722961]

If anyone ventures into northern France I can strongly recommend the exhibition centre at Agincourt.

If you get around to going again S.H. perhaps you could ask a guide, if the two fingers story is true or not.I could however imagine our Archers doing this though.:D

    Lincoln .7

Yes,I will, Linc – I will be there during the Summer. I had also heard that the story was a myth but then much of what we know is often conjecture anyway. But I will certainly ask and my guess is that it will not be the first time they have had the question!!

No doubt she is, but did you have to put it so bluntly ?

If you are dead, you are dead. It is not blunt, just a statement of fact, surely. Perhaps you prefer the dreaded euphemisms like passing away or passing on or gone to the big film set in the sky. I know some people find them “kinder” and “more sensitive”. I suppose there is an argument in their favour when talking directly to people who are known personally, but I am not aware that any of us knew her personally.:)

Well, she was certainly one of the last true film “stars”. Never a great actress although in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf” she excelled herself. I think she had been ill and confined to a wheel chair for some time but certainly a great star to be mourned.

Yes, I was rather wondering when we would see this intervention….;) Perhaps “blue” jokes are a default setting for some….:(

    Well you did ask…………………..:diablo:

I was having dinner with Garry Kasporov (the world chess champion) and there was a check tablecloth. It took him two hours to pass me the salt.

He said “You remind me of a pepper-pot”, I said “I’ll take that as a condiment”.

And I’ve got a friend who’s fallen in love with two school bags, he’s bisatchel.

A lorry-load of tortoises crashed into a train-load of terrapins, I thought to myself “That’s a turtle disaster”.

Four fonts walk into a bar. The barman says “Oi – get out! We don’t want your type in here”

A jump-lead walks into a bar. The barman says “I’ll serve you, but don’t start anything”.

Linc – I am not in the least bit worried as I can drop out of a thread anytime – none of us HAS to read them. There just seems to be more backbiting and petty squabbling and less interesting debate, recently and I just find it a bit tedious……..but there’s loads of other stuff on the forum, so a few misses in GD are no great loss.
