Has Hans von Werra’s story ever been filmed? If so it must have been years ago and I have no recollection of it. Perhaps it was not widely released. It is certainly a great story.

im not sure, but anyone capable of drowning a newborn baby in a toilet, and cutting it in half, does not deserve to live themselves, when it comes to prison, release is inevitable regardless of the circumstances

That’s not what I said. I said quite clearly, FOR LIFE, AND THAT MEANS LIFE. And as for being deserving of life or death the argument is based on an individual or a group of individuals determining in cold blood whether or not another’s life should be taken after due course of law. In your eyes you clearly differentiate between types of murder, otherwise you would not have made your case in those words. So, where do you draw the line? Which murders should result in capital punishment and which not?

The other thread on this subject (different theft) seemed to have drifted a bit so I wanted to put this on a new thread, reported on Sky this morning.

It may be a different theft but it is still a theft and presumably the posts will echo those of the other thread. I am not sure how you are differentiating between the two threads.

The inevitable highly charged emotive reaction to this despicable crime is understsandable. But all that does is to cloud rational judgement of whether or not the death penalty can ever be justified.

It is clear that a majority in the UK still favour it for certain crimes. The act of taking a life in cold blood as punishment for the taking of the original life has to be debated rationally not emotionally.

Some would argue that a life sentence, and that means life, under miserable conditions, would be a far more effective punishment, leaving the individual to live with the crime for the rest of their lives.

I have been reading all these posts with interest because I am not sure where i stand on this. There are valid arguments from all sides. I am not convinced that a remake, which would be expensive and have to be profitable, would be an improvement, other than from a technical point of view, inevitably.

I agree that the treatment of the original with religious revererence is ridiculous, but the history of remakes of classic films is littered with failure.

Far better to find a WW2 story which has not been filmed before – there must be hundreds. There is a sad dearth of original material on TV and on film and we need new stories and new ideas not rehashes or remakes.

To criticise one’s viewing habits is a cheap shot, and a quite pointless dig at someone for the hell of it. Most seem to be getting on the bandwagon about why viewers watch “such terrible” programs, which to me is a little sad and pathetic. Now as a 36 year old I could understand being criticised for watching The Teletubbies, ( I used to watch it, with my kids 😀 ) but people should be a little more tolerable considering we all must share a diverse taste in the Television we choose to watch and not be made to feel like 2nd rate citizens.

Do you not think you are being over sensitive? Why is the criticism a “cheap shot”? No one is “digging” at anyone for hell of it. Those of us who find too much television cheap and tawdry surely have the right of criticism both of the programmes and by extension those who watch. And if some really feel like 2nd rate citizens then it really does say a lot about both them and the programmes. If people feel entirely comfortable watching then they would not feel victimised by the criticism.
