Send me some Bits and I will restore them !!
You might even get some of them back!!!
Seriously – good luck with this – I will be there with bells on the day she flies – Just wish I could be there to help but a 24,000Mile comute round trip is a little challenging.

I was at Both Brooklands and East K last year and this thought occured to me then – why not join up all the dots and create a third Wellington – would be great – I think most of the airframe could be found and the Brooklands crew have all the techniques for the parts which couldn’t be located .
Very good idea I think

Hi all
I am in Aus and having difficulty buying a Legends 2005 DVD on the Net – most I have found will only sell in Europe – any ideas ?

Watch Melbourne docks very carefully………………

Hi
Both were apparently constructed by Melve with parts left from the kit he bought to construct the Stirling and he turned into the Rewind – apparently he became disorientated whilst consuming one too many coffees at the airport Cafe and these are the result.

Well Chaps
I personally Love Legends
Speculation is all part of the fun and shouldn’t be derided – just don’t read the posts if it bores you !!!
Whilst I am lucky to be able to go to the UK every year to see the Legends or whatever I try not to loose my perspective – If you want the best setting in the world with some up close breathtaking flying try WANAKA in New Zealand – Now that is one truely great airshow with lots to offer and see- perhaps not quite the numbers of Dux but every bit as exciting.
In 2006 I expect there will be the La9 , Polikarpovs, Yak 9, 3 P40s at least , two Spits at least, 2 P51s at least, a Corsair, Hurricane etc all mixed in for a great show against alpine snow capped “Lord of the Rings mountains – Now thats worth seeing.
John P
PS saw a very nice pair of P40B wings the other day which should be there in 2006 !!!
Where to start?
Fair exchange is no robbery- this is an oft quoted line from an article on the export of Australian Historic aircraft.
Dating back many years Australia has lost many significant airframes abroad – 137 by my count!!! – including the Hendon Hudson, The Allen Ki43 Oscar ( The last remaining complete aircraft to have attacked Australia), 30 + Spitfires (Wrecks and identities as well as whole airframes), 3 Beaufighters , P40s, P38s and so on and so on.
The point is I used to get really upset by all of this – to what end – they are mostly now all in good homes and preserved and the Australian Warbird scene has never been better. Sure there have been huge mistakes – The Oscar should never have been allowed to leave – but on the whole we are better off as a result of letting natural trade take its course. In any country there are landmark airframes which should be quarantined and kept as sacrosanct at all costs remaining in the country but as for the rest nothing is past the pale in my opinion.
We discuss at length on this site the UK and what takes place there – the facts are it is still a great place to visit and the richness of the scene is still fantastic. As far as the flying Warbird scene in the UK, the basics still need to be addressed sooner than later. I would highlight a few here.
1) Lack of emerging new younger owners
2) Lack of a uniform, clear and transparent process for the importation and operation of new Warbird airframes from Overseas
3) Failure to effectively deal with new operating costs from the commercial operation of aircraft that seem to have migrated mistakenly into Warbird operations
4) Insurance debacle – need to pursue better arrangements for the operation of Historic aircraft.
As long as all of the above continue to plague the UK Scene then the results will be as they are at present – Who would take on a Warbird in the UK at present with all the Buracratic hassells in place. The occasional rich dedicated soul will happen by, but you are definitely weeding out potential sponsors of aircraft who ultimately go off to play with 4 ½ Litre Bentleys or Buy old Trains because it’s easier.
Ah but you say all those aircraft from overseas aren’t safe – well that is the case anywhere and a few UK rebuilds left a bit to be desired – Aus , NZ and the US all have adequate rebuild procedures and nothing here has fallen off in my memory or failed due to dud manufacture so it’s just a furphy – not real
To Sally B – Subjective hogwash.- Sally B represents her kind that did so much to contribute to the history of the UK during WW11 – she is far more a substantially complete and original than the majority of historic aircraft flying about at Legends this year – do a materials audit on some of the Spits and Hurricanes there and I bet a lot of the airframe is new build – not that I have any problem with that as in my opinion it makes them safer anyway – It’s just ludicrous to argue that most of this stuff is historic to the UK and Sally B is less so – Send her down under and we will happily look after her.
The Mosquito – Well I will differ with my colleagues here – I am not happy with any 60+ year old wooden aircraft flying about especially with the power and potential of a Mossie. I am sure you can fettle one up to fly and it will be as safe as possible but it is still 60 years old and techniques and technology move on. I am far happier that Glyn Powell and co in NZ do their thing and build “New” ones from scratch – Better – known quantity – and cheaper? I think we should retire the veterans to the Museum where they belong and be preserved like the Duxford example – Magnificent! As to the wing repair in the UK – Priced a new one from Glynn? – False economy in my opinion if the cost couldn’t be calculated to just build a new one from NZ rather than repair this one- the old wing could be sold and go somewhere else like the Windsor Canada and so on museum aircraft (The fuselage was manufactured by Glyn in NZ anyway!)
The Sunderland – Well Just think about the cost of operating the Sunderland and sally B plus a few other UK historic aircraft and then think about the costs being poured into the Vulcan – misplaced priorities?
Just my thoughts – get into me!!! Just remember I happily come to the UK whenever possible to view the Best place in the world for historic aircraft and I am as committed as anybody to making it even better but people just have to be prepared to open their eyes and minds.
Kindest regards
John P
PS Melvyn Are you selling the Rewind Clobbermiester to start on the Chinese Stirling – not a lot of wood and it has 4 engines ?
