Is La Ferte a long way from australia !!!!!!!!!!

    Hi Stieglitz

I did such a trip once – it took 27 hours door to airfield in a jumbo !!!

Australia is in ……….. well Australia ( the largish bit at the bottom of the Pacific) and La Ferte is …….well sort of French which is to say in ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, sort of in France ( The Largish bit on the left side of Europe). So no I wouldn’t normally go there on a weekend.

Seriously thanks for your comment I will be in France again this year and I will go to La Ferte and seek out the Vietnam stuff

    Kindest Regards

Sea Fury going to NZ- what little I DO know

    Hi
I was over at Wanaka and was told by one of the UK visitors from a reputable company that a Sea Fury was in the process of being purchased in the UK for a “Prominant New Zealander” I was of course very interested but then they would venture no more and that was that – Perhaps Graham Orphan may have heard something? So that is what I know – I really hope it is true and results in a “new” Sea Fury for the Kiwis I have been lucky enough to see a few in the air and they do have a special magic all of their own.

    Boomerangs and Beaufighters

    Hi all

    1) Boomerangs
Numbers – There are at least 3-4 advanced airworthy restorations – all of which bar one have recently changed hands so that is why some are taking time to get flying.

Despite appearances there is not all that much potential to get a lot more flying due to the excellent job that was done scrapping them after the War. A lot of fuselage frames survived but very few wing centre sections either Boomerang or Wirraway survive and most of these are now incorporated into rebuilds. There are virtually no outer wings left so new build ones have been used.

Everbody says you can use Harvard parts but this is not the case as they are not the same – just similar – and even the original modified T6 wings on Guido ‘s machine were replaced with new build items when these became available from Mathew Dennings fantastic rebuild process.

From my limited knowledge there is no recorded instance of a Boomerang engaging Japanese aircraft but I could be wrong – you are correct in saying that the type was a highly regarded ground attack and FAC type. I suggest however that if Mathew (Mr Boomerang) Denning is lurking that he may have more to add on this.

    2) Beaufighters
Yes I have other shots from the “shed” and I will post them but they are very poor owing to no flash and poor light.

I had thought that both UK built sections were roughly the same proportions and as such it will be hard to work out which was which. Be very careful here as at one stage up to six fuselages were floating around including some spare unused ones which may be very hard to identify.

    Re Beaufighter fuselage in background

    Hi Steve

Yes it is a Beaufighter fuselage in the background and if you want to see it today you are probably a lot closer to it than I am. I took this photo some time in the 1980s at Schyville in NSW near Sydney and it was at that time the storage facility for a lot of the people associated with HARS – They recovered quite a lot of Beau material and at that time there were 4 Beau fuselages in this Hanger/Shed, two of which were the UK built machines recovered from North West Australia and the others were Mk21 Australian fuselages – I believe that both the UK fuselages are now in the UK – one being the Duxford example and some magazine reports sugest that the other is now part of the Skysport “package” although I don’t have any first hand knowledge.

Over the years various large sections including fuselages and centre sections have appeared on farms etc – some unused spares and these have added to the mix.

Other reports put some Beaufighter material with the Australian War Memorial and another with the RAAF museum Point Cook for restorations.

I also Believe HARS is still intending to get one flying and they probably have enough remaining material to do this.

A Beaufighter is largely restored at Moorabin Air Museum and another at Harold Thomas Museum at Narrellan near Sydney – these are both Mk21s Harold also has a restored nose/cockpit section.

    Hi

Firstly to Dave in Kiwi land
Dave I understand your sense of loss at seeing the Sea Fury leave the country – Don’t worry it is well loved and cared for here in Brisbane. I am led to believe that another may arrive soon to console you – a proper one with Bristol etc. It is an awsome sight and sound in the air – we are lucky in Queensland to have two Sea Furys here – The Ex Kiwi one and the Zuccoli Collection one at Toowoomba which does not fly at present but is being kept airworthy and will again soon I believe – Photos below and if you like these I have a page of Australian Sea Fury / Fury photos on my Webshots account at

    http://community.webshots.com/user/setter125

I emailed Steve a couple of times about his loverly Sea Fury and he stated that the reason he has to use the Yank engine and prop is the almost non existance of parts for the Pommie donk and prop in the US – I think he would prefer the Bristol but it is not possible. Luckily spares are reasonably under control here.

I expect to see the Ex Kiwi example flying this weekend at Cabooluture airshow near here. Photos on Monday.

    Hi Growler

    Quite True

I believe it was restored by Denis saunders for Guido and then raced reno and given it’s stock condition it’s performance was very good against the local P51s etc some of which were pretty highly modified.

The same Mr Saunders also restored Guidos Boomerang as well as a sort of boomerang for himself.

    Kindest regards

    Hi Growler

    Thanks for your post.

There are more photos on my Webshots account at http://community.webshots.com/user/setter125 on the boomerang page

Yes I love the Boomerang and of course there are now 2 flying as well as the static original example at RAAF Museum Point Cook. If you search the web there are some extreamly good shots of both flying examples and I will be putting some of my own up soon to add to these although I must yeild to superior photographic ability of some of the pros around now.

I think that there is every chance of at least 3 more airworthy machines in the not to distant future in South Australia and Melbourne and perhaps one or two static machines but you never know the “doings’ for more exist and there is no reason more could not materialise soon.

    Hi

Guido Zuccoli – The inspiration behind the restoration of the Fiat was a very passionate man about his aircraft and as a result the Fiat reflected a little of the passion in the new paint scheme it now wears- It was also used in a Film shot near Newcastle NSW and I think that this probably is reflected in the color scheme.

I will post a before and after shots on a further post in a few minutes as well as some Boomerang shots as requested.

    Hi My Rainbows

Surviving Vietnam – a crash, two broken legs etc and total disenchantment with the US political system and the Australian Government that followed them there and everywhere since (like now) as a result (Don’t get excited I still love yanks just NOT your or My leaders) – at least a limp is better than being dead.

Seeing the Warbird movement come of age and blossom as it has – I know it has it’s faults but on balance it is one hell of a sucess –

Getting to see some of the best airshows and museums I could ever imagine on 3 continents and NZ as well as the airshows

Most of all knowing and sharing my interest with people like all of you on this forum – we don’t always have to agree but we do respect and listen

more than one Demon in Australia

    Hi all

There are in fact two Hawker Demons in Australia.

One was recovered from Tasmania many years ago and another which I am a little hazier on is also undergoing a somewhat prolonged restoration to airworthiness here in Queensland and that is the one to which I was referring as it is in Queensland at Caboolture Museum. Jack McDonald was doing the restoration but it has not progressed much in recent years and I would dearly love to see it restored and flying.

The first aircraft was restored many years ago and is on display at RAAF Museum Point Cook I believe. It is a beautiful machine and really looks the part.

I have included photos of both aircraft.

    Kindest regards
