I wish you all the best for tomorrow, Damien and Catherine 🙂

P.S. Personally, I can’t think of a better place to get married than Duxford (having got married there myself!)

Outside public hours, when there are not so many people around, is when the IWM needs more fire cover for the priceless aircraft they have stewardship of, not less.
My only worry over this incident would be how tight the airfield security was whilst the emergency was in progress. I trust not all the guards off the main gate were running around with fire axes??

Moggy…don’t worry, as my earlier post mentions, there are always two “teams” on duty – one for security, one for fire. So on Monday night, most of those on duty would have attended to the Blenheim and her crew, but a security presence on site would have been maintained at the same time. Every night, the Guardroom cover some 35 miles (yes, 35!) patrolling the site, keeping a beady eye out for trouble.

CAS wrote “the IWM security team is also the fire cover at duxford”Maybe the wording ‘security team’ is misleading, it implies someone who walks around the hangars at night with a guard dog and a touch, or perhaps someone who reads a newspaper while watching a CCTV monitor.
Surely Duxford Airfield firecrews are not permanently stationed at the top of a greasy pole ready to react to an aircraft emergency 24/7/365 as stated by Ashley. If so could the money spent on such an ‘over the top’ service be diverted to the maintenance of the exhibits within the museum.
DOUGHNUT
The Security team and firecrew are the same people…they are trained to do both jobs…every day there will be two teams of Security Officers on site – 1 team will be concentrating on security matters, the other team on fire duty…at least one Fire engine is kept on a ready state of alert 24/7 and the crews are all ready for action…
I am sorry if you think this service is “over the top”…I can think of a few guys who have been most grateful to our “boys” and I am sure they would join me in disagreeing with you.

Right…this is the only post I am going to make about the accident other than my initial reaction earlier in the thread…
Although I agree with YAK11 fan that this is not the place to have this debate, I have this to say…

The ‘security team’ are trained to operate fire appliances and to rescue crew from burning wrecks are they? I wonder what the Fire Brigades Union have to say about that. As we heard so often last year, fire fighting is a specialised job carried out by firemen.
And you would know this how??? Do you work at Duxford? Do you see these guys day in day out? Do you know what training they have? Well obviously I guess not…
Each and every member of our fire team is a fully fledged fireman…they are fully trained to CAA standards to cope with emergencies like this…and have done on several occasions…
Don’t you DARE assume they are not fully trained and start talking about Fire Brigade Unions…Get the FACTS then comment…

The crew were very lucky there was no fire as this was a landing over two hours after the emergency services had stood down when the airfield closed at 6pm…
Again…check your facts before posting, please…we have trained staff equipped to deal with emergencies on site 24/7/365

The rumour I heard has been confirmed by another unofficial rumour that she did indeed hit the fence and motorway bank which ripped off one undercarriage leg and on landing after swinging through 90 degrees the other collasped as well.
The following text is taken from the Director’s Office intended for the people of Duxford:
It appears that the aircraft suffered an engine problem on approach to the motorway end of the airfield, clipped the bank between the motorway and the end of the runway and crash landed on the airfield.
This pretty much coincides with what you have stated…although it is only the two men who were on board who know exactly what happened, it seems as though the rumour you have heard is pretty much what happened…
Finally…

firstly the IWM security team is also the fire cover at duxford and as such were aware of out of hours flying activities
and as usual reacted in their usual fast and efficent manor to a well rehearsed plan and we all appreciate their efforts
Thank you for this Cas…I am sure “the boys” would only be too pleased to read this…

Lancman…”Sally Traffic” is Radio 2…Radio 2=BBC…BBC=complete bunch of stupid ******* who wouldn’t know the truth if it bit them…
Although they do make Eastenders…I like that…
~Realises she’s had a “I’ll get me coat” moment and skips off home~ 😉
Cannot believe this…I just happened to look out of the spare bedroom window last night and saw the Blenheim flying past coming in to land at Duxford…next I know, I hear it has crash landed.
Very relieved to hear those on board are ok, and I gather from sources the plane is repairable, but don’t expect to see it on the circuit for a little while.
Ashley
Well it should be an aircraft that we presently do not have a flying example of so…
From Hendon…the Defiant…
From Duxford…the Javellin…
From Cosford…the TSR.2…
From Newark…the Vulcan…
From Elvington…the Anson…
From Mosquito Museum…a Mosquito…(but not W4050…she should be kept safe for future generations, but that’s a different thread altogther!)
Hmmmm…a nice little mix there 🙂
