Attached photos were taken circa 1955. The Spit is TE199; serial of Lanc not known. Among aircraft used in training exercises at Sutton was Lanc ‘Spirit of Russia’ (109 ops with 9 Sqn as WS-R I believe); I am told it was burnt. The photos were taken by an old friend, the late Ken Charles who was killed in his Tipsy Nipper in 1972; he had belonged the ATC squadron there.

Not sure when the Fire School moved to Catterick (1958/9?) but later types were used at Sutton, including Hunter and Vampire.

Anyone have photos of other Sutton victims or know if ex-Luftwaffe airframes were used?

I don’t think there were runways there – it was a barrage balloon base during the war and had large (high) hangars accordingly. It later became the home of the RAF Fire School – before it moved on the Catterick. There were rumours when I was at school (mid-fifties) that there were German aircraft among those consumed in the practice fires there. I do have some photos taken by a friend of mine that was in the Air Training Corps squadron that was based there – an anonymous Lanc and the all-black Spit 16 TE199. Will try and dig them out before I go on holiday next week.

    Soviet Stirling

I hate those replies that go …. ” as far as I remember” or ” off the top of my head” but its my turn now! Some years ago I consulted a PRO file of correspondence from the British Mission(?) in Moscow. The RAF liaison officer was being harrassed by the Russians to organise examples of the “latest RAF types” for them to evaluate. After a lot of hedging the supply of virtually obsolescent types was arranged – certainly the Stirling, a Merlin-engined Halifax, a Mosquito (B.IV I think) and a Typhoon (previously mentioned in these columns); the latter arrived after the war in Europe was over!

If I can find my original notes I will post something more accurate.

Hold your horses Snapper. Fw 190A-5/U8,PN999, ex-‘white 6’ of I/SKG 10, captured Manston 20 June 43, to A&AEE and then RAE, where it was flown by Beamont on 13 September 43. Later to 1426 Flight and CFE – as ‘EA-4’. See ‘War Prizes’ by Phil Butler. Think I have a pic somewhere …

Yes you’re right about dayglo PAINT on RAF aircraft, but didn’t think the paper strips came in until around 1964 and am very surprised to see a GREY Hunter as early as 1962.

The ‘GREY’ Hunters were photographed in 1972. The paper stripped examples (unless it was paint in horizontal strips?) were two ‘silver’ 229 OCU T.7s visiting Leconfield in August 1961. One was XL579 ’92’ which I recorded as having black and red dayglo horizontal stripes on the nose and rear fuselage. I’ve been looking for photographic proof ever since! Anyone?

Don’t think these can be as early as 1962, as Hunter T.7s were silver with yellow trainer bands then and and not painted grey & dayglo until around 1965-67. Incidently the first Hunter T.7 doesn’t have ‘dayglo’ panels, just plain red!

Albert, if we are talking about dayglo paint, and even the adhesive strips, you are way out on this one. I started making notes in 1960 and recorded Vampires and a Provost at the Battle of Britain display that year with orange dayglo. First T.7 I saw with dayglo strips was a 229 OCU aircraft in August 1961. I saw the Balliols/Sea Balliols at St Athan on a ‘drive by’ so was unable to make notes, but it was definitely April 1962.

Sorry about the Hunter with red strips!

WJ866 it is. First noted by me at Hurn in May 71, uncoded. ‘849 added later in the year. Photo’d Feb 72. By all means use it on your site.

Vintage dayglo 2 and St Athan 1962

    … and now some RAF.

At St Athan in 1962 (April?) I saw a group of silver/red dayglo Balliols or Sea Balliols, parked at the end of a disused runway. Anyone know what/why/how many and have a photo?

    Vintage dayglo

As promised, and including my favourite Meteor T.7 scheme. Not sure if WK142 was the one in the background of the TT.20 shot but it was photographed on the same day.

    Lime-green dayglo

Thanks for that Albert, and yes Wildcat, I have a shot of the Canberra somewhere but it will have to wait until tomorrow.

    Different dayglo?

I took the attached shot of an FRU Meteor TT.20 at Hurn in October 1969. When the prints ‘came back’ I was dismayed the underside colour showed as yellow and black, whereas my eyes had told me the colours were lime green dayglo and black. I assume that the (Kodak) film could not register the true colour. I recently scanned the negative in the hope that the true colour might appear – but no – even with some help from Photoshop.

I’m beginning to doubt my memory now – can someone confirm there were such lime green/black TT-striped machines?
