Yes it’s the mound off Belmer Road (I didn’t know what the road was called until I read your post). A step ladder is useful but not essential as there a couple of pallets on top of the mound you can stand on. There is a footpath near the end of Green Street which leads into the nearby field’s which is good for photography in the afternoon when landing on 23 as well. Make sure you do not park anywhere near the crash gate at the end of the road though.
Lovely shot of the Kingfisher 727!
I waited 6 hours for that thing to depart LTN a few weeks ago! Gave up when the sun set. 🙁
From what I understand it is used by the Force India F1 team so look out for it on a Monday after a Grand Prix. I shot it on the Monday after the German race.
Most were taken from the mound near the the fire training place that you describe. The light there is only good for photography in the late afternoon/evening. There is some fencing there which has mostly fallen down. I go there regularly, as do many others and have never been challenged or chased away. Security sometimes take the registrations of the cars parked in the lane but other than that they leave you alone. I know of some other spots for shooting planes on approach to Stansted in the morning near Molehill Green for 23 and Takeley for 05. I can send you more info on these if you are interested.
Below is a link to the official outline flying display for the week, looks as though the A380 will be up on all days, though on Tuesday it is listed as “team Airbus A380” no idea what that means though

Radio 5 Live are reporting that the EU have just agreed to outlaw the misleading advertising of fares. Airlines will have to advertise the total fare to be paid including ALL charges and fees.
With the price of fuel these days ..i’m quite surprised those gas guzzling SP’s are still flying
Most seem to be in the hands off Middle East governments such as Saudi Arabia and Oman where I guess the price of fuel is not really an issue :D. Yet another SP came into Stansted yesterday (08/07) A9C-HAK of the Bahrain Royal Flight as well as RA-82079 an An124 (a gas guzzler if ever there was one). Will post some pictures when I get round to processing them.
Brilliant set of pictures, well impressed. Glad to hear that I am not the only one who thinks the Tu154 is beautiful. I’m also impressed with the guy balancing on top of that step ladder. I have one just like it and have fallen off every time I have tried to get on the top step unless I am next to fence that I can hang onto.
I heard a radio interview with the boss of Silverjet just after EOS went bust, he claimed that Silverjet would have been in profit this year with around 80% passenger loading’s but for the rise in fuel prices. A small rise in the fares to cover the increased fuel prices would see the airline in profit for the first time later in the year, we shall see.
Great shot, well captured.
Do CargoLux operate in and out of Manston frequently?
Thanks for your comments. As far as I can work out they have a regular slot on Tuesdays operating as CV 7179. It’s due in around 12:30 and departs again between 14:00 and 15:00. Has operated on the last two Tuesdays so seems quite reliable. Worth checking Flightstats.com the day before if you intend making the trip down there to see if it’s operating.
Yes, seems we have been waiting forever. Nice to see a new mark of aircraft at LHR to add to the variety. I love your avatar Ren. That BA bag reminds me of my first flight. I went LHR to San Francisco on a BA 747 back in the mid 70’s with my Mum when I was about 8. I vividly remember that my she had one of those bags on the flight as they were designed to fit under the seats of a 747. Great memories:)
Thanks for your kind comments. The first shot is quite heavily cropped and the second less so as I used a 1.5 extender with the lens. These shots only really come off when the moon is nearly full (I have a calendar which has the phases of the moon) and is rising or setting during daylight hours. There are various web sites that give the rising and setting times for the moon. The sky also needs to be as clear as possible. You need to be in positions when the moon is either rising or setting so that it not too high in the sky. On this day they were using 09R for departures and the moon was due to rise at around 2pm. I guessed that some time during the afternoon the planes would cross in front of the moon as they climbed out, as it happened only a few did so its down to luck really.
All the best, Tony
