Dear Skipper,
As far as I know it went to a private collector unconnected to the 361st – I wasn’t aware of it until the auction ended but at the time some guys on army air forces forum did try and buy it with the aim of giving it to its original pilot Charlie Screws but it came to nothing as it went for over 1200 euros.
Good luck with your hunt for a 388th BG insignia & would love to join you for a pint and a walk round the airfield next time you are over from Stavanger (although we may be busy – my wife is expecting our 1st child anytime soon).
Very best regards
Jason
THANKS
Dear Graham/Skipper,
Many thanks for your kind comments.
It is great to see that the 388th Assoc. are putting all these photos on the web where all enthusiasts can see them – they are truly magnificient images.
Many 361st vets. & historians were very pleased & amazed to see the p-47 photos – we were giving up hope of seeing a 361st FG P-47 in colour ( althought subsequently the fin from a 361st FG Thunderbolt did turn up on German ebay complete with its olive drab paint and serial number – shame I was too late to bid).
Perhaps we should all meet up at the Swan for a pint one day!
Best regards
Jason π
Dear Skipper,
I hope you may reconsider some of your comments above – I think all Moggy has ever done is to try & ensure that these photos were seen by people who were truly interested in them.
As soon as Moggy became aware of any potential conflict they were withdrawn.
Furthermore without Moggy’s actions the 361st Fighter group would have been deprived of the only colour photos of its P-47’s in existence.
Best regards

Just Landed
Curtis Hawk 75 just landed after its 1st flight at DX – I think in the capable hands of Pete Kynsey – sorry my camera has packed up – but there were plenty of people there with cameras.
All seemed ok – most of the flight was conducted well to the north of DX.
Earlier everyone seemed to be having a play with MH434, including Ray Hanna – Stephen Grey also flew EP120.
Best regards

Egg beater
What do you want with an egg beater?????????????????????????
Hope it doesn’t delay the purchase of a serious warbird.
Have numerous P-51 & P-47 colour schemes when you are ready.
Very best regards from your old flying partner form over the Tirpitz!!!!

) What do you like most about Duxford?
Superb variety of aircraft, the fact that the collection changes regularly and the fact it is a flying museum.
2) What do you dislike most about Duxford?
Aircraft rotting outside, especially annoying for recently restored examples such as thehastings. Poor catering, high admission prices & lack of knowledge in some of the museum staff.
3) What makes you return to Duxford? (When time and distance allows of course!)
The fact that the collection changes and we can see the warbirds flying and see restorations in progress.
4) What do we get right at Duxford?
Friends of Duxford, allowing the public to see the aircraft fly, allowing children free entry as we need a new generation of enthusiasts.
5) What do we get wrong?
Too many aircraft outside, lack of knowledgeable staff, not enough is made of the airfields historical past with relevant exhibits showing what parts of the airfield would have looked like in the past.
6) What changes or improvements would you like to see made at Duxford?
Better catering, improved shop with better trained staff, more exhibits showing the history of the airfield.
7) Should we put on more airshows? Or fewer? Quantity or quality β for example have fewer airshows with longer displays?
Not much wrong with current line-up of airshows.
8) If sometimes you are accompanied to Duxford by family or friends who are not particularly interested in aircraft, do they leave feeling they have at least had an interesting day out, or do they think that Duxford is for enthusiasts only?
Most people love it but the catering and high admission price put people off from returning. There could be alot more done in terms of giving more details of the aircraft and explaining its role – only the B-24 does this adequately.
9) How do you rate the catering outlets at Duxford? Expensive or good value for money? Enough variety?
Very poor and too expensive.
10) How do you rate the Museum shop? Is it well stocked for enthusiasts with something new to catch your interest each time you visit? What in your opinion could we sell that we donβt already?
Some improvement but aimed too much at the casual visitor, shops are poor for the real enthusiast, also staff are poor – I asked about a book on the Mustang and they said they had never heard of such a plane.
Could stock – aviation art, more books, rc model shop, more aviation clothing.
Hope this helps

Hi Bluenoser,
Thanks for the kind words on the site – i have to admit I haven’t updated it for a while as I have been busy getting married and opening a new business with my wife – hopefully see more updates soon.
Yes I have worn my A-2 to DX on my many occasions – unfortunately I have just sold it to a good friend as my waist has expanded somewhat since my wife has been cooking for me – it is an Eastman.
Jeff Ethell was a great guy and that is a great video – one of my favourites.
If you are ever near DX give a shout – I live within a stone’s throw of the American Air Museum.
Best regards
Jason
Hi Bluenoser,
Have always followed your postings with great interest.
A-2 that was found was I believe complete, unfortunatley it was donated to a museum before any pictures were taken, so am in the process of chasing them up for a photo – it was Lt Kozicki’s I believe which just happens to be the design I copied for my last jacket. Photos are attached – if I get anything from the museum I will contact you.
I hadn’t heard your story before about Sweden – while Urban Drew is a great fighter pilot and I’m sure a great man, he had a reputation for the odd tall story – I’ve read an awful lot about USAAF ops and have never heard of any such story.
Cheers

Thanks Blusenoser for the kind words about 361fg.com – have been tempted to take some yellow paint and a have go at Princess Elizabeth once or twice, but I have to say she does look sweet.
Indebted to Moggy for the colour photos of the bolt – Roger Freeman’s jaw dropped when I mentioned them – only colour 361st FG P-47 photos in existence.
Still alot of stuff coming via the site – a guy has recently found one of our guys A-2’s in France (hegot shot down & evaded).
Also the remains of Charlie Screws bolt has just been found in Holland.
Cheers

Yes this is the right place – am building a Ziroli Corsair myself and am looking at these colour schemes – this is all I have been able to find so far despite numerous web searches.

By the way the Corsair didn’t fly with the USAF or RAF – but with the Fleet Air Arm and United States Navt & Marines!
Good luck

Sorry didn’t catch you on the bridge Moggy at midnight on the 5th – Traffic & restrictions made it impossible.
1. Horsa Glider on Thursday afternoon 3rd June
2. Dug-up Mk IX spit at Musee De Bataille De Normandie, Bayeux
3. Re-enactment at St Mere Eglise
4. Mass para drop at La Fiere
5. La Patrouille De France

Where are you staying Jason?
Moggy
Am staying in a tent at a campsite (Camping Portland) near Port en Bessin.
Where are you staying??

It certainly will be a highlight – I have always wanted to meet Pierre Closterman and have re-read his book many times.
However it clashes I think with para-drop and flying display at St Mere Eglise and events at Pegasus bridge (seems an awful lot of good stuff going on the afternoon of the 5th).
Difficult to choose what to do although with the restictions it may be able to get anywhere.
6th seems confined to the lage interbational ceremonies where no doubt the security will be frightful as jammed packed with politicians climbing on the bandwagon.

I was planning to be on Pegasus bridge at midnight on the 5th! – hopefully may see you there.
We are staying in Port-en-Bessin & are planning to see the Para drop & flying display near St Mere Eglise during the daytime on the 5th but will try to get over to Pegasus Bridge in the eveing.
Most of the restrictions seem to apply on the 6th – and some sort of permits are required for the larger international ceremonies. Am sure we might be able to blag are way in with some franglais.
Any gen from anyone in the know much appreciated.
