    Hi Stuart gowans
Would this be the part of the Harness that you have suggested?

like you i would of preferred it to of been Spitfire related lol.

Reminds of a thread i put on a few years ago asking for help on an aircraft relic identity, it turned out to be a 1960s television motherboard argghhh, but its always good to see people asking for help on this forum as you just never no what it may be, (im still learning) but hopefully some of my i.d. help requests also helps others as some very knowledgeable people on this forum.

Here is a photo of the Maxi with t coupling bracket, those are the mounting points by the pinion I can’t quite make out on the first photo.
Ive actually got a Maxi steering rack at work if you like i can take a photo and post an image so you can see if it matches, let me know.
I guess this post should be on a classic car forum lol, but a rare item none the less.

    Hi 52 classic
Its definitely not Spitfire as the yoke adjustment is a screw type with shims and not plated with 2 bolts also the spitfire has two mettle flat type brackets at either end one beside the pinion and one beside the gator and n/s bush. but if i could have a clearer photo i can definitely identify it for you Southernair99.
The Maxi did also have a coupling type set up

One more question would any one no what the cable is in this photo? It’s covering appears to be a made of material inside the metal cable is kind of coiled around a brake type cable, could this be canopy related?

Thank you once again for every ones help above, thats great diagram of frame12 Oldspitty i will use this to put with the relic itself and information regarding it being possibly from X4773 but will mark it up as (possible) but with thanks to Ian its a good possibility going by the description of PT766s remains.

Thank you once again for your valued reply and time in replying, so it could be either PT766 or X4773 but more the lata although it was said to be from a Battle of Britain crash site.

In regards to the frame number I would of said it was one of two above marked by pencil 2nd and third frame back, can anyone confirm the number? and which one?

Needs a near side bracket mount to be a Cortina
Also the side plate adjuster or as we refer it yoke adjustment has 10mm bolts for the Cortina and not half inch.

Austin Maxi steering rack if it has a mounting bracket threaded hole near the pinion just above to the side cant quite see, if you can send a clearer photo of that area then i can nail it for you,if not its a Austin 1100 seen a few of these in my past. used to recondition 40 a day of these now thats just blown my age lol.

    Hi Ian
Just checking my paperwork it was a repair to the tail leg not the tail fin, sorry to confuse things.

I will also attempt to send a photo tomorrow, hopefully it might throw some light.

    Hi
Thank you all for your above input, i was told this relic had come from Battle of Britain Spitfire, although i believe X4773 was first flown on the 14/11/40 would this still be included in the Battle of Britain official time scale?

    Hi ian
I purchased this relic from the Newark cockpit fest last weekend , another buyer also confirmed that it was frame 11 which is a nice substantial part, but the main reason for this post is to put the correct history with this relic and file this section so it never separates from its history.

I could attempt to get a photo of his particular relic if you like maybe you may recognise it, although im sure it may be difficult to confirm.

Have to agree with you farnboroughrob in regards to the aircraft selected, i visited around a month ago and come away very sad and disappointed to think that this new hall has replaced such an iconic former Battle of Britain hall, it took me around 15 minutes to see what i wanted to see and to think this had cost around £25 million (correct me if im wrong) for me it was a complete waste of money that could of been better spent, like it has been said did we really have to destroy the former Battle of Britain hall to commemorate the 100 years of the Raf ?

Also to see the new area that represents the Battle of Britain is for me sad to see,to see such iconic aircraft being crammed into an area that dosnt even allow some of the aircraft to have there wings fitted due to lack of space, (im just hoping that this is a temporary display)

The busiest part of the day that i spent there was the old Battle of Britain footage of the film formerly of the Battle of Britain hall, where people crammed around a small TV (says it all really) unlike some i loved this footage so did many others hearing those Merlins at the end made many a gooseump and left you feeling very proud of this part of our Raf History.

All i can say as far as the Battle of Britain side of the museum is, we must all be grateful for the likes of the Battle of Britain Museum Hawkinge and the likes, as the Raf Museum appears to of sadly lost the summer of 1940 and its importance.

    HI Mike
Thank you for your advice i will give it a go with caution at the weekend, a real shame that they were painted but going by yours it does appear that the original finish can possibly be rescued.

Of a matter of interest what did the ebay seller list it as? did you ever find its identity if not via the number itself?

Mine was apart of a garden fence so like you say there were more and not of one aircraft, at least that clears that up.

    Regards Brad.
