Went along today at the crack of dawn a great event for the classic car enthusiast but little in the way of aviation items i would say there was around three stalls with aero items but more in the way of classic car stalls, the one item that caught my eye was a Junkers 88A-4 rear cockpit gun turret that appeared to be complete with glass and gun mount it was up for £350 kind of kicked myself for not making an offer but i have just recently purchased one less the glass and mount (never mind always next time or will there) also bumped into FLY.BUY and had a nice chat and catch up along the way.
Overall a good day i have to admit i like the buzz of going along to these events not knowing what might just turn up, nice to come back with a few quid for a change (mind you)

    Hi FLY.BUY
That certainly clears things up in regards to the centre hole,as the yoke i have would of been converted to a link trainer at some point in its history, previously being made for a flying aircraft as it shows the correct hole size and slot before being adapted for link trainer usage.
Thanks to all the above comments and Swifter.

That clears that up then, i would say the yoke i have was formerly a Norseman/Barkley that was converted into a link trainer as it appears FLY.BUY you have evidence of his, so any yoke with the centre yoke modification as per my control yoke is a link trainer.

Many thanks again for everyone’s input in regard to this thread..

    Hi FLY.BUY
Thanks again for your valued reply, i have to say i agree with you 100 percent as the modification does appear to be less rebust to your average if not all control yokes around this era, its just a pity there are no references to this type of yoke fixing on the net, which will always leave it open to debate.

Unless of course someone owns a link trainer that shows this type of fixing.

Thanks for the reply and input J Boyle

Just surfing the net for any possible photos of behind the centre cap of the yoke itself on the Noresman and come across this link

    http://www.flight-manuals-online.com/product/noorduyn-c-64-norseman/#

If you look at the photo of the link trainer that jasonp51d had posted on no 6 reply you can see that the centre fixing appears to be very similar unfortunately it is hard to zoom in on it for any any clarity.

Would anyone have any clearer photos of the yoke fixing behind the centre cap?

    Any thoughts also?

    Hi Jasonp51d
Sorry for the late reply, it certainly looks identical to the control wheel i have apparently this type of trainer dates from 1929, i would think the smaller hole sizing at the centre of the yoke is to adapt to a link trainer (as Fly.buy has previously suggested)

But also looking back at the thread “Your favourite control column/grip” on number 1068 ( byFly.buy) it shows a wheel from a Lerwick with a small centre hole also but of different design, like Fly.buy has said before it would be unusual for a wheel to have such a small hole like the Lerwick but it appears some may have this small design.

The yoke i have appears to of been modified, could this of been to fit something else ie for example a Barkley Grow T8P1 to a Norseman (or other) as both these aircraft have identical yokes, or the link trainer as suggested.

The weight of the yoke is light about the same in weight as the DC3 i have.

looking also at the DC3 yoke on no 1060 on the”Your favourite control column/grip” it again shows a modification of this size of centre hole.

I guess the only way for sure is to see what is behind the centre cap/Bolt to see what design there is on the likes of the Barkley and Norseman and the link trainer.

It would be great to get to the bottom of this as the subject does appear to crop up frequently.

    Good spot Fly.buy

Also looking through some previous posts Rocketeer has suggested the Norseman looks identical, so looks like it may of been fitted on a few different types of aircraft, I’ll keep looking maybe there may be other suggestions.

    Hi DonClark
Firstly i must apologise for getting back late as i have been a little busy since my post, but now im back on the keyboard.

I have to say that is a very detailed reply and must thank you for your time and effort, it covers in good detail both aircraft and crew and some good advice that i can at some point pursue other avenues for future research, if you dont mind i will add this reply to my folder of information regarding Blenheim R2771 and its crew, like you i would sway towards this aircraft not being a Mk1VF as also browsing through the book “The Bristol Blenheim a complete history” by Graham Warner it also states that this aircraft was a part of Coastal Command.

Oh and thank you for pointing out the correct spelling of Thanet you wouldnt think i lived just a few miles from there would you 🙂 Corrected

    Many thanks again.

If anyone else would have any other information on the aircraft and crew of the Blenheim serial no R2771 it would be very much appreciated.

    Hi all
Just a follow up to my on going saga to confirm the crash site and aircraft and crew of a relic board i acquired some 7 years ago, on the board itself it stated on a card
(Blenheim Sarre Thanet) and nothuing else
Whilst hours of searching and help i came across the “History of Manston airfield 1916 to 2016” site and came across this

    05-10-1940
No.53 Sqn Blenheim IVF R2771 crewed by Sgt A.Hall (obs), P/O K.Faukner (Pilot) and Sgt G.Fielder (WOp/ag) left from Detling was damaged in a shipping strike. The aircraft lost height in the circuit at Manston in bad visibility on the return from a sweep to the Hook of Holland and flew into the ground, **possibly at Sarre** Sgt. Hall killed, P/O Faukner and Sgt. Fielder seriously injured.

So i feel this has got a good chance of being the Bristol Blenheim Mk1V serial R2771 as looking through this site there has only been 3 Blenheims that crashed in and around the Manston airfield with significant damage that is.

So feel pretty pleased that i can now put an aircraft and more importantly crew with there story to the board of relics that i have.

Thank you as always for the help given to the two threads that i put up in regards to this.

I would love to know who put together the panel that i now have, as im pretty sure they must of had some source to the drawings from somewhere which would be very helpful in finding the correct RCAF Hurricane cockpit panel dials etc.

    Any ideas anyone?

This is a close up of my dial, the majority of the dials on my panel are Kollsman.

That would be helpful if you can post any extra information that you can source from your great contacts from Canada and visa versa.
