Hi Rocketeer
I can now put a face to you as i was there at the time you sold the gun button to a Gentleman at old Sarum.
Incidentally im going to attempt researching this week, the 2 blue boxes of relics you sold me at a very good price certainly going to keep me busy.
That certainly makes sense A.M.
Thank you again for your help once again.
Great idea Wyvernfan
Nothing better than seeing unidentified parts of aircraft coming back to life on this forum with the expertise of the forumites, for example.
I picked up what i thought was a quite interesting part at Boscombe down aero jumble last Saturday, the seller had purchased it around 7 years ago at the former Shoreham aerojumble. he had tried to identify it but had no joy, but thanks to the experts on the historic page it has now been positively identified as being from a fraser Nash N16 gun turret that would of been fitted to the front of the Whitley bomber, without such threads a lot of these parts would be sadly lost in time.
like redhillwings has stated there is a lot of public interest in the so called scraps of metal in many museums around the UK that helps to keep the memories alive of the fallen from a tiny bolt through to a Lancaster fuselage.
Great idea for me personally.
Just researching the web ref the FN16 Front gun turret that incidently as far as i can see was just fitted to the Armstrong Whitley of which was the first bomber to go on a flight to Germany on the night War was declared Sept 1939.
I came across this little gem on you tube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUHBDP8vq2g
This is what i so love about collecting such items as above as for me it opens up yet another chapter on another flying hero of WW2.
Thanks A.M.
That certainly clears up where it is situated within the turret, anyone any ideas of its use? sorry im not to good on this subject could it possibly be something to do with the moveability of the machine guns in some way?
Hi Whitley
Thank you for your prompt reply, I took a gamble on it at the Boscombe Down aero jumble today so quite a nice find, I also managed to get hold of part of the turret canopy (relic) the part where the machine guns went through the turret itself small section with traces of Perspex, it came from Wellington BK347 so a good day for the Fraser Nash field.
Two more photos
Hi Brad,
Hold fire as the engine isn’t at the museum just yet, the other 3 unrestored Merlins from JD150 are on display but you have probably seen them before, we also have the FN4 on display now although I am yet to label it which I will do very soon. We also have a Bomber Command Veteran Sigining on the 6th May this year.
Ive got that date already in my diary, for anyone else who hasnt yet been to one of the signing events, its certainly a very well organised event and a great way to meet the veterans, and a look around the museum is a must with dispalys changing all the time, i can highly recommend a visit.
Sorry to go of topic slightly.
Not that i need an excuse but looks like my second visit comng up this year, as last time there i hadnt witnesed this great piece of workmanship, cant wait to see the Merlin it in motion.
Thank you penpusher for your update photos,
Like you say DragonRapide we will just have to trust all the changes, im just happy we have the Kent Battle of Britain Hawkinge to show the story of the Battle of Britain as its looking like Hendon may of lost there way a little, but we will just have to wait and see, ive not been to Hendon for a while unlike previous years, i will definately be spending more of my time in Kent.
As for me personally the Battle of Britain hall closing has lost its appeal for me (my opinion of course)
Thanks for posting
What a Gem of a relic
The amount of times ive walked up and down this beach looking for relics and this turns up, mind you seeing this i may of turned quickly in the other direction even though it was a Dud.
I hope it finds an appreciative home.
The link on ebay is to the son of Corke Areo of lincolshire.
Downland aviation used to be based down in Sussex and used tio be a pleasure to deal with and well recommened. Sadly I believe the gentleman who ran it has now retired.
Thanks again Worcs Aviation the ebay link may be a path to follow.
A shame reference the Downland Aviation as no doubt would of been a handy link, but thank you for letting me know.
I can’t tell you much about the Canadian panels, not sure what is correct or not. The Airspeed indicator should go to 400 MPH if the same as a British one, the Artificial Horizon, is the later type , not fitted on MK I British Hurricanes. Magneto double switch should be the shorter toggle type. Downland Aviation used to do good undercarriage indicators. Hope this helps a bit.
Ant.
Thank you again for your quick reply and help, sorry was meant to add that i had added the artificial horizon (for now) ref the Magneto switch being longer would you know what type of aircraft mine may of fitted?
Ref the Download aviation used would there be a link for this?
Just to add one other thing could someone also tell me if these dials are correct on the completed panel one question for me is reference the MPH (Air) instrument would this be correct for a MK1 Hurricane? recording of 320 mph.
Thanks again.
I’m sure he wont mind me mentioning him, but Ron Taylor in Canada is doing a Canadian Hurricane cockpit project. He is a regular here so I’m sure he will be along to give you some help and advice. I can help you with advice on a Mk I British panel, but not sure which you have ?
Ant.
Hi Worcs Aviation
Thank you for taking the time to reply, below is a link of the Hurricane panel that i have the link was previously started by flyingblind.
Unfortunately since the thread was started back in 2013 a few instruments have gone missing, i have been told its from a RCAF Mk1 Hurricane but unfortunately whilst searching the net for sources up to now i have found no further info on my particular panel. whether it is the correct panel or not i would still like to complete it to the nearest as possible , so any information would be very much appreciated.
The left hand side of the panel is complete.
The blind flying panel is missing the top right instrument, the middle bottom Giro and the bottom right turn slip dial.
The right hand side panel is complete bar Temperature gauge fuel, the boost instrument (currently i have replaced it for now with a port and starboard fuel switch) also the rad temp dial and the rectangular instrument?
of course the other extremely rare undercarriage dial at the very top left of the left panel, which has a temporary home made replacement.
So ideally i will require what i believe are American produced instruments.
Im a little out of my depth on this one but hopefully some of you panel experts can point me in the right direction.
