The Ethiopian 767 ditching is/was not a good example.
It had been hijacked and flown to the point of fuel starvation. The ditching was going well untill at around 30 feet above the water the hijackers bagan a fight in the cockpit with the Captain who was flying the plane at the time getting hit over the head with a weapon, causing an involuntary command of the yoke to the left, which dipped the left wing.
It hit first and the resulting G-forces ripped the plan apart.Had there not been a fight in the cockpit, its quite possible the plane would have belly landed relatively softly and intact.
I also believe the Ethiopian ditching happened in quite shallow water, and was also close enough to the shore for people watching on the beach to wade out there and help people who suffered injuries

i read on Pprune a joke….
a lady on a long haul flight had ordered Vegetarian meals…on breakfast service the hostie had gave her breakfast box..within minutes of being handed it to her,she was pressing the call button…hostie went over and asked what was the problem..lady kept saying she ordered the vege meal, and the hosties kept telling her it was..after a heated debate the lady pointed to the side of the box and said “LOOK IT SAYS BACON”, the hostie looked and said no madame, thats our web address “BA.COM”
Not too bad….but…Salzburg airport is already named “SALZBURG/MOZART International”…..so perhaps a recognition for one of Austria’s famous sons would not go on an airplane….instead of being generic???

Ohh fantastic…The day of the closing ceromony is the day i fly out there…ohh what joy that will be!
One word: Aeroflot.
Paul
oh come on now….be fair….Aeroflot seems to have got a helluva lot better…New Airbus/Boeing planes coming on tap, western style management which includes safety being a high priority. Gone are the days when an Aeroflot captains pre-flight walk-round consisted of nothing more than kicking the tyres….Also im lead to believe the Flight attendants dont come from tractor factories anymore! 😀
there are airlines out there with far worse maintenence records than BA. And probably some of them are alot closer to home than you could imagine.
to be fair…MOL has quoted that 2 things could ruin Ryanair…1. is an accident caused by poor standards safety or 2. World War3.
If you read the book about Ryanair..you will discover that MOL has a mean cost cutting streak to improve profits etc etc…but when it comes down to airplane maitenence then no expense is spared.
Don’t go skiing….. !!! 🙂
or if you do, fly to Innsbruck,Salzberg,Chambery or Calgary…all airports that know how to handle the demands of the british ski-ing tourist!
I flew into Turin airport last year for ski-ing(2005), and it was a complete shambles, One of my first comments to the group i was with was “how the hell will they cope with the Olympics”. Flew with Firstchoice, and the stansted flight was tucked in between the FCA Gatwick and Manchester flight…One check-in desk for each. Took almost 1 1/2 hrs to clear security (removed Shoes,Belts, coats and Jumpers) got through security to find on the airside there is a TINY duty free/giftware shop and an overpriced winebar, our flight to STN was 3hrs late, so not a great deal to do,except look out the window and give marks from 1-10 on airplane landings… Now if you partake in the filthy habbit of smoking, like myself Italy has no smoking in public places rule.
asked a policeman if i could go outside to get a quick fix outside and he let me through a opening in security, Decided to hang around the check-in side as that was where the best restaurants/cafe’s are for a few mins, Rejoined the security check queue, only for the policeman to recognise me and wave me through without being re-checked,which was a shock…eventully our FCA A321 showed up and was allowed to board..got back to stansted, only to find that half the luggage went between Machester and Gatwick, and we got some of there’s (give FCA credit, i had my case back by 9am the next day).
Turin is a shambles from my experiance, and im flying there again on Feb 26 with FCA to try not to break a bone while ski-ing.
One other thing….if you do happen to go there…have a spare 10 Euro coin for the baggage trolley or a credit card to swipe through the machine, thats if you happen to get one…seemed to be a severe shortage of them last time.
On another quick note…..The Winter Olympics is in roughly 6 weeks time! and some of the events are being held in Sestriere and Sauze d’oulx about a 2hr coach transfer if your going.. I think the only events to be held in Turin are the Skating,Curling and Ice Hockey.
Happy New Year All….it could be the 777, with those new Quieter engines that ANA,Boeing and GE are test flying at the moment….or a 787
ive bleated on about this a few times now…i wanted to visit Prague earlier this year,i know Easyjet fly there,so i looked up the price and they wanted £50 each way plus taxes, which i didnt think was to bad at all, looked at the BA website, they offered me a return ticket for £79 Incl the taxes and the flight times were much friendlier than the Easyjet.
If you know the dates u want, then have a look at a BA,there not as expensive as they are made out to be by the likes of MOL or Stelios.
Also i wanted a single way flight from ROME to CDG, Alitalia was going to lighten my wallet by the amount of £590, AirFrance was about £5 cheaper…It worked out cheaper for me to fly BA from Rome to LHR,then LHR to CDG!!!
ok i apologise if this has been in a previous thread…
The 737/A32X market is highly competitive, with both companies offering discounts galore and freebies (training or maitenence training), would it be true to say that both companies discount so much that it makes developing a sucessor to both models to be restricted.
The 737NG model wasnt a great step forward in terms of technology (unless u count improved powerplant and flightdeck) but the A32X family has been kicking around since the 1980’s and included fly by wire, composite structures etc etc. I would say that both aircraft are here to stay for along time to come, simply because the technology isnt available or too expensive to put on a highly competitive market, unless one manufacturer is prepared to take losses, and that wouldnt please the shareholders!
