Nice shots Si… how was the trip?
I saw G-BYGE sitting on the Tarmac at LHR last week. You got some nice shots from inside the musuem. Are there anymore to come?
That Falcon… did FedEx ever really use them?!
Andrew, thanks for the comments, I took quite a few shots in the museum but they are mainly military and the space shuttle, so I guess they would not be very welcome on this photo thread. It was amazing to be standing beside the B29 that dropped the Atom Bomb on Hiroshima, the Enola Gay (all sorts of thoughts were going through my mind as I looked at her). The museum also had the Global Challenger, A Space Shuttle, Concorde and many many more aircraft. They really know how to display aircraft well. The trip went very well, however with only 2 days in the States it really does knacker you out. I was working at NAS Patuxent River where the USN carry out all their flight trials, managed to get up close and personal with the JSF F35.
Regarding the FEDEX Falcon 20, yes they had a huge fleet of these aircraft and belive it or not a lot of them are now flying in the UK as Flight Refuelling bought them who operate them for the Fleet requirements and Direction Unit based at Bournemouth.

The BY 737 must have been adhoc or brought in by BA to suppliment a route. I wonder did Courtline ever operate out of LHR with the 1-11 or L1011? I remember for a while BA used the L1011 on the LHR-BFS route which was an amazing difference from the Trident 3B that usually operated the route. When you flew on the Tristar the cabin crew gave you a little booklet and poster of the aircraft, I think I still have mine tucked away somewhere. LHR was truly a great airport back in the 70’s and early 80’s (so i’m told). 😉

Chris,
I have seen this before at military airfields due to the movement of the magnetic north by .x of a degree per year until such point where the runway heading does not align with the magnetic north heading. It is usually reflected in aeronautical and os charts with a note saying the last time the mag north was checked so that when you take a compass bearing you must add / take away the variation (depending where you are in the world).

Paul,
Beauties…………! Love the Qatari Bus and the 732 with oil streaks (real jets).

Sam,
Just echoing everyone else’s replies, great shots and what an oppertunity for you to go there. I guess it one of those spots that is on every aviation photographers check off list to do. My wife has promised me that someday we will go there…….someday! I read somewhere that the days of standing on that beach maybe numbered, was there anything out there as far as construction and moving the road etc?
Once again great shots….must admit my favourite is the Spirit Airbus.

I thought the RN where replacing them the same time when the RAF did maybe there here to stay for some time. Great shots there like the good old RAF SAR Sea King shot and the J31.
BTW any Hawk shots:D
James
Manston,
No mate we have two types of Jetstream, the T2 which is based at Culdrose primarily used for Basic Observer training and the T3 which at VL. Currently no plans to replace the planes as they do the job very well.

Stu,
Nice little selection; if you don’t mind my comments, some are blurred, just try notching up your unsharp mask or do a few more passes, Number 1 would be excellent with just a little more sharpening. You have a little too much colour saturation on some of the shots, it could be down to your monitor (possibly) and some have quite a bit of noise. What kind of processing software are you using? My personal favourites are number 3 and 4.
Hope you don’t mind the comments and keep on shooting, it is the great beauty of digi photography.

Great selection mate, nice to see a link between North and South Wales…have you sent any of these shots to Highland, I’m sure they would like to see some images of their first flight on this route? Isn’t the J31 a great plane to fly in, we have 3 based at Yeovilton and my eldest daughter is an engineer on the aircraft…she just loves them, they all have names, hers is side number 77, callsign Doris!!!
Well done and thanks for the post.

Fantastic critique on these shots, your thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated. Sometimes I think I am slightly arty when it comes to avaition photography, but that is just my style.
